"We understand that this requires a lot of explanation, and we are ready to do that," said Sato.
I would call it brainwashing.

Japan is breaking United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea by proceeding with this discharge
Also, what other elements are in the water which are more lethal than Tritium?
Strontium and Iodine?
What are the levels of Cesium-38?
The focus is on Tritium but that is most likely the least of our worries

Japan is good with PR campaigns. They should have Kishida and Nishimura go and eat some sashimi over there after the water is released. Since their junior partner Komeito is also concerned about releasing the water in the summer during swimming season, The KN show could also take a dip in water at the beach.

I wonder why the IAEA, itself an organisation within the United Nations, is not aware of this. You might just well be the first person to notice it, maybe you should tell them?
See for yourself: https://www.iaea.org/sites/default/files/first_interlaboratory_comparison_on_the_determination_of_radionuclides_in_alps_treated_water.pdf
The information you seek is on pages 20 through 31. Spoiler: Well below 1% of the regulation limits.

A spokesman for the Fukushima Prefectural Federation of Fisheries Co-operative Associations said TEPCO's measures inspired little confidence about radiation risks.
But "the reputational damage is the bigger concern," he told AFP, declining to be named.
This is going to be a gut punch to the fishermen here. People all over will vote with their wallets.

@Roy your comment is not well received just like the tritium.
Roy Sophveason
Of course it is. But they have been royally dry forked in March of 2011, nothing that follows that will ever bring anything positive for them. Waste water release or not, do you honestly believe that, after 2011, a "proudly harvested in Fukushima" label will ever have a positive effect on customers ever again?
And I'm not sure how to remedy that. Disguising the origin of products? Governmental subsidies? Don't they get those already anyway? I'm not so sure PR campaigns will have any noticeable impact.

dumping nuclear waste water into the ocean is so charming. thanks guys!
Aly Rustom
No argument there.
No but I think dumping more nuclear waste in the ocean might make EVEN MORE people reluctant to buy their products.
The sad thing is, those in power don't give a rat's butt.

This was the final report this week

The IAEA has affirmed the safety of this release plan. It takes intelligence to recognize intelligence.

So what reputable, independent 3rd party is going to monitor this 24x7 for the lifetime of this discharge? I would not believe it if it is self monitored by Tepco or one of their subsidiaries.

Fighto!
The baseless rumours need to stop. Now. Anyone who doubts the Japanese government or the fully independent IAEA - who have given the green light for the clean water to be released - needs to put up or shut up.
That includes fishermen, foreign nations and all the wannabe "experts".

Live streamed fish is very nice, a live streamed dosimeter display among the fish is even nicer. lol

Btw, I’ve red from an expert, that by eating a banana you would ingest much more radiation than eating those Fukushima fish. The banana contains healthy Potassium , but therefore also a small percentage of radiating Potassium isotopes, while the filtered and partly decontaminated NPP wastewater still contains radiating part too but by much lower radiating Tritium.

People should be aware of this map/website before going.

Very good map but nearly all areas except near to the NPP and some hotspots, otherwise low levels. There are still areas that are off-limits.
TrafficCone
the single most important fact about tritium: due to its exceptionally weak electron, the dose rates associated with tritium exposure are so low, a tiny fraction of background radiation, that the body's repair processes have no problem repairing any tritium damage.
kurisupisu
‘legal limits, negligible risk, bananas are more dangerous, keep smiling and you’ll be fine etc
Why aren’t other countries nearby cheering on the Japanese?
I don’t see any gay displays of frivolity and laughter and people parading the streets!
How about no risk, 100% safe and I can choose to eat bananas..

Setting "regulation" limits and saying that things are under a so called safety threshold is an old age trick and is also used by companies and the FDA regarding safe quantities of chemicals in food for example. Then companies just keep within those limits which turn out to be not so safe after all. There are numerous examples of this.
Smoke, mirrors and lies, with circuses set up and freshly baked bread given to the masses just for good measure.
I agree the TEPCO clowns and politicians should be dining on freshly caught fish immediately in the area the water is released as well as going for a dip. it is swimming season in Japan, afterall. Only then will I believe a word of what they say.
CrashTestDummy
Wouldn't it be better to just dump the water in some desolate desert that has little to no life? I'd bet some countries would allow it for a fee. Just a thought.
Roy Sophveason
Then what, if not regulatory limits, should they adhere to? What, in your opinion, is the yardstick by which anything is measured?
It's easy to scream foul play, but be more constructive in your criticism, you need to name an alternative.
What would that actually say about the safety of anything?
Rodney
The partially treated cooling water is a fraction compared to the untreated water that flows into the sea, air and groundwater. Plutonium is detected on Ibaraki beaches.
tora
Zero.

You're literally asking the impossible.
