As it’s, the Chinese have already picked what they deem good from the “ democracies”, and we can’t deny it’s served them well...and surprise! No regime change is likely for a long time ! The Tibet issue - out ! The Uighurs - out!

Let’s learn to stay out of other peoples business.

Remember that when Taiwanese streets are bombed out and the people living in shelters. China cannot be allowed to seize Taiwan in the same way Russia is trying with Ukraine.

What a vile example of humanity he is - killing the poor woman because he perceived her life better than his. Loathsome slug!

Europe and North America have a smaller chance to catch up because the "educated class" from accountants to lawyers and system engineers are pushing back against AI to try and save their jobs.

And why not? Who wants to be replaced by a computer controlled semi-sentient robot? I'd be furious if my (Admin) job was taken by a machine.

Posted in: Do you think there is a role for monarchies in any country in this day and age? See in context

I'm not a republican, not a socialist... and I don't have any issues with the Monarchies in any country. They've never harmed me, never left me feeling out of pocket... We pay more per person for road tax, the NHS, our state pensions...

I believe in Monarchy, the history of the Crown... I wouldn't want to see it replaced by some prat of a president voted for every few years. Who would want their country to be a drab, grey republic, devoid of pageantry.

Sorry, I'm a Monarchist

Posted in: Britain feared Japan would spy on its office at 1979 G7 Tokyo summit See in context

Every country spies on every other country... it's probably why we've not had a nuclear war yet. All those embassies and consulates in Tokyo... agents reporting to their masters on doings and goings-on... see that foreigner over there? The one with the camera? Spy! That Chinese girl with the ear buds? Spy... anyone could be a spy... you just never know...

As for the Japanese supposedly spying on the British Delegation in 1979... old news.

Posted in: Large majority of otaku in Japan want to keep being otaku after having kids, survey says See in context

Funny how anyone with a hobby is looked down on as some sort of weirdo, yet if they like baseball or other sports then that's different.

I don't see why having kids should affect your interests... you can still enjoy model-making, watching anime, collecting PVC figurines, etc... yes, you'll have less time and money with the ankle biters running around, but you can still keep your hobbies going.

Posted in: What is the biggest change to your life that was brought about by the COVID pandemic during the past three years? See in context

Covid helped to destroy a long term long distance relationship... I've also only recently started to use public transport for my working from the office days... and I wear a mask. Too much coughing, sneezing and snorting on the bus for my liking. Never used to bother me - no I'm scared of catching some virulent form of the virus.

It's about time! Now, start lowering the airfares.

Sadly that's linked to the war in Ukraine and the OPEC countries manipulating the markets to keep fuel prices high

One lady and an old man had the guts to close the door but I bet if 10 people would have held the door then it would have ended quicker. Are there no heroes left in the world?

And risk getting wallopped by a crow bar? They could have been armed with something even more lethal. And what sort of heroes would you like? Ones in capes, or 'heroes' with concealed hand guns?

Posted in: Japan eyes shift to 'quality' experiences as inbound tourism recovers See in context

I normally visit friends, go shopping for souvenirs and hobby items, take loads of photos and generally wander about and see what new things I can find. I like to just go places at random.

Had a rail pass once, but it was a bit of a faff using it... never bought one for any holidays to Japan after that.

Reminds me of what happened with Vic Morrow making the Twilight Zone movie - they finished that film despite a court case and John Landis guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

Accidents happen on set, but I'm glad they'll be using dummy weapons and SFX.

Posted in: Does capital punishment make Japan a 'barbaric' country? See in context

My problem is that unless there is 100% proof then execution shouldn't even be on the table... juries can get it wrong, confessions can be forced, evidence planted or faked. There are just too many variables at play for anyone to be 100% certain unless they are live on camera doing the killing - and none of us want to see that!

Beyond reasonable doubt means little when there is even a scintilla of a chance that the person in the dock is innocent.

Helmets for cyclists make sense... of course you'll get the numpties who think that it's somehow infringing their rights. Just a pity this new law has no teeth.

Posted in: ‘Star Trek’, swear words and TV characters’ changing mores See in context

"Oh dash it all... the gosh-darned Titan is going to explode... whatever are we to do?"

Star Trek has always been a product of its time, and the language sometimes verges on the silly as the writers went out of their way not to offend anyone. The swearing doesn't bother me - Picard's world isn't a utopia... it's never been a utopia.

Death penalties for mutiny and visiting Talos IV, for example... not exactly life affirming.

Roddenberry wasn't really a visionary, by the way - he just turned Forbidden Planet into a TV series ^_

As shocking as it is, I'm not surprised - I've seen some 'making of' featurettes on some Japanese DVDs and the directors are like ogres, bullying and threatening... so, no this isn't a surprise, but still very shocking.
