The Tokyo metropolitan government on Monday reported 4,836 new coronavirus cases, down 3,295 from Sunday and down 538 from last Monday. It is the first time since Jan 17 that the daily figure for the capital has dropped below 5,000.
By age group, 692 cases were in their 20s, 772 in their 30s and 850 in their 40s, while 739 were aged between 10 and 19, and 1,036 younger than 10.
The number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms in Tokyo is 64, up one from Sunday, health officials said. The nationwide number is 1,175, unchanged from Sunday.
Nationwide, the number of reported cases was 32,741. After Tokyo, the prefectures with the most cases were Kanagawa (4,205), Saitama (3,055), Chiba (2,324), Fukuoka (1,690), Osaka (1,467), Ibaraki (1,258), Hyogo (1,129), Hokkaido (1,042), Kyoto (622), Shizuoka (569), Nara (565), Shiga (546), Hiroshima (515), Kumamoto (421), Fukui (408), Niigata (369), Aomori (350), Ishikawa (334), Okayama (289), Mie (289), Saga (283), Gunma (278), Miyagi (269), Okinawa (262), Nagano (260), Fukushima (232), Kagawa (230), Kagoshima (203), Oita (184), Toyama (183), Iwate (174), Yamaguchi (159), Wakayama (158) and Ehime (155).
The number of coronavirus-related deaths reported nationwide was 116.

I always find it odd JT doesn’t give the 50 and above number. I have to do the math each time - 747 - to save it others.
As I always suggest, the deaths and serious cases by age and other illness would be a better number to track. No of infections is fairly meaningless.

Omicron ( or the latest variant) is not fatal in the majority of cases AND deaths occur in those of 80 years or above.

Omicron is the deadliest variant of Covid in Japan to date. The teenager with zero health issues from Saitama who DIED from Covid on 2/9 wasn’t 80….. or even 20….. then there’s the 1 kid from Kanagawa and 1 from Kyoto both below 10 who both died from Covid in the last 10 days . Omicron doesn’t discriminate and being 90 or any age for that matter doesn’t make it more excusable…..
Any death is very much ado about everything.

actually I don’t think it does. In reality
you don’t know how Covid will impact you as an individual until you actually catch it. It impacts everyone differently and it’s difficult to predict who will have long term complications and who won’t. Many athletes are struggling with long Covid. Even after the pandemic calms down japan will still have many long Covid patients to treat.
