No, it wasn't. China reached out to Ukraine. Now comes the job of selling Russia's terms to Ukraine, who will reject anything but the return of all occupied territory. Ukraine cant possibly give ground on territory or it sets itself up for future conflict with Russia, who will do the same again and look for more territory to be ceded.

Russia has a huge military with stockpiles of weapons that may even be larger than Americas (though much of it outdated). It was simply not possible to give Ukraine more weapons than Russia has, and they need close to parity at least, to win this conflict.

Troops need to be trained on what they will use and in basic military tactics and to build an army comparable to Russia's while fighting a holding action, is not a short term prospect. Expecting to get huge amounts of weaponry for untrained people and storing it in Ukraine where it can be targeted by spies and sympathizers would not help Ukraine. The UA must be built up over time, while it defends against Russia's invasion, so that it can evict Russia from most if not all of the occupied territories.

It took over a year for China to contact Ukraine. Very sure Ukraine has been asking everyone for help and so far China has done nothing to assist Ukraine except about $1 mill in humanitarian aid. Now Jinping speaks with Zelenski about peace with its ally Russia. Not a good starting point. China has very low credibility for peace talks being an ally of Russia, while using Russian propaganda and not bothering to talk to Ukraine for over a year.

If they (China) were neutral and began maneuvering for peace talks within the first weeks of the invasion they would have more credibility. They didnt and they have none (credibility).
