Posted in: Mount Fuji trail use to be restricted when overcrowded See in context

I agree with @TrevorPeace, this will probably get mixed views. Safety vs profit. I've climbed Fuji during the peak season and I can't remember how many times I've had to wait in line along the trail because of the foot traffic, it feels ironic and comical. Imagine being 8,000 or so feet up a mountain in the dark and cold but feeling like being in a line for a train or a store because of the line. It's not enjoyable. They could've at least allowed the climbing season for a longer duration instead. I wouldn't mind climbing fuji in more challenging conditions if it means less people around.

There have been eight cases involving a man pleading to enter homes, using different reasons, in Izumi Ward since April, according to police.

that's a new one. Stuff like these made me lose my faith in answering the door to strangers. lock him up before he can institutionalize his skills and actually earn a living for it.

"Going forward, we will refuse to purchase any items from customers of Vietnamese nationality. This is a comprehensive decision by our store, and we will not be answering any [questions] related to the detailed reason.

Going forward, we will continue to aim for a safe, secure way of business.

Thank you for your understanding."

Said it as if it was easy as breathing. Japan still has a long way to go, that I am sure of.

Lost of Vietnamese young people causing trouble in Osaka lately. Plenty of crimes associated with them, hopefully the Yakuza will crack down on them, the police are hopeless.

got any stories/ reports to go with that? I'm willing to read.

Posted in: Locals warn Mount Fuji climbers to take challenge seriously See in context

I've climbed that mountain twice and never even attempted to do the sunrise hike since I know how crowded the trail gets, it's just not worth it. In my experience, there will always been those "weekend warriors" who will try to overexert themselves all while being unprepared for the hike (see @EFD's comment), and that is not the management's fault. Mt. Fuji's height isn't at that dangerous level yet, but I will say that if your cardio is bad and you get winded easily at sea level, you will have a hard time climbing at this altitude. The best the management can do is to warn and let nature run its course for those who can't read.

Mt. Fuji. as much as it is beautiful, it's also a tourist trap. Camp sites around during peak camping season looks like there's a music festival there everyday. climbing the mountain is also something. imagine how bustling new year's eve is, but on a mountain. the experience is not serene but stressful.

Posted in: Do you think summers are hotter now than when you were younger? See in context

without a doubt. growing up in the late 90's to early 2000's, the noontime summer heat was still bearable and you could still walk in the midday sun without hurting your head from the heat. The summer in the past years, especially here in Southeast Asia, had become almost inhuman. During the midday heat, you would hardly see anybody walking in the hottest times of day without some form of protection from the sun. My benchmark would be is how many tough-looking blue collar workers are now using umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun when commuting, there are more using them.

we're not there yet. AI right now is still confined to secretarial tasks like chat gpt. we should be concerned if AI-operated security assets are introduced. imagine a reaper drone armed with missiles deciding to hit innocent civilians. once we're at that stage, we should worry.

Posted in: What do you think of the availability and level of English-speaking mental health professionals for foreigners in Japan? See in context

there are hardly even mental health practitioners for the Japanese, forget about practitioners for foreigners. The good thing about being a foreigner in Japan is that chances are, we're more open to talk about our personal problems with other foreigners (assuming they're willing to lend an ear) and they can function as your support group. Of course, nothing beats professional help, but I'll take whatever help I can get. The bad thing about a very traditional culture is mental health is still seen as a myth and mental health problems are seen as a joke.

Posted in: Japan issues heatstroke alerts as temperatures soar See in context

Born and raised in Southeast Asia and here's what I can point out what the Japanese do wrong during hot weather: 1. they turn the airconditioner's thermostat too high, I get the cool biz campaign, but set it to a comfy temperature. 2. use electric fans, don't believe that urban legend. 3. don't drink hot drinks during the heat of the day. 4. sleep cool, you don't need that thick mattress and blankets during the summer. 5. dress down. you probably can ditch the coat and tie when commuting and just wear a t-shirt.

summers in Japan are drier than the Philippines, so the heat feels more intense, but at least sweating keeps you cooler in dry heat. in my opinion, more humidity feels more oppressing.

Posted in: Japan considers raising truck speed limit for faster goods deliveries See in context

why not just use the railways to ship goods? I mean, most trains close at a certain time. I'm pretty sure rail and logistics companies can come to an agreement to ship goods by rail if conditions are met. no traffic and they can probably get there faster. raising the speed limits is like turning your stove on higher than needed heat to cook your food faster.

Posted in: Kyoto merchants want city to install more trash cans to fight litter in historic neighborhood See in context

It has always been a question to me as to why there are almost no publish trash cans in Japan despite being an ultra-clean country (speaking for someone coming from a developing country). I know that it is expected for people to carry their trash with them and dispose of them at home. But this will not be applicable for everybody. I agree with @Yubaru, those businesses should chip in and fund the trash maintenance themselves since those come from their businesses. That trash has to go somewhere and you can't expect all tourists to have the same manners as the locals, there will be outliers.

Yes, and i unfortunately climbed during the peak of the climbing season. I remember waiting at certain choke points and steeper sections due to heavy foot traffic. Posted in: How should schools deal with so-called "monster parents" who verbally abuse or complain about teachers for the way they treat their children? See in context

There are also similar cases like this in other countries, but it is more pronounced in Japan considering the immense pressure on students getting unreasonably high grades. My take here is this, school officials should learn to discern whether a complaint is just or is just a parent acting up. Dragon and tiger parents in japan are everywhere and imperfections will not (sadly) be tolerated.

Posted in: Armed GSDF member briefly goes missing overnight in Sapporo See in context

kinda concerning that the education board immediately ordered the lockdown of schools in the area just because of an unaccounted straggler. If you asked me, the civilian authorities could've mobilized the police and other emergency services instead. For those who don't know, land nav when you're cold, wet, miserable and carrying heavy gear gets tiring real fast. Stragglers are commonplace, but they're usually found with their training/ battle buddy. I wouldn't write this off as an incompetence by the JGSDF, it's just that authorities are understandably jumpy in light of recent events.

"Insufficient equipment and unreasonable planning are often the causes (of accidents in mountains)," an NPA official said. "We recommend people plan well in advance and check weather information to prevent such accidents."

I've seen this happen. People climb with just the clothing and gear they have when they commute and expect to just wing the hike without much issue. While I don't expect the average person to be prepared completely for the outdoors, in the very least they should be decently prepared. This also includes being physically fit and are prepared to handle simple emergencies such as bad weather.

report to the school management, the bully's parents, and if the case is worse, even as far as the police. if the bullying persists, hopefully the victim stands up for himself and pushes back. When I was a kid, bullying was rampant and the school never took it seriously. So, the kids would take matters into their own hands and fought back instead and the bullies just moved on to easier prey.
