U.S. says 3-way summit with Japan, S Korea to be 'historic'

The United States expects that a trilateral summit with Japan and South Korea to be hosted by President Joe Biden later this month at his Camp David retreat will be "historic," a White House official said Wednesday.

Biden is "very much looking forward to hosting" the summit on Aug. 18, White House national security spokesman John Kirby said, noting that bolstering a trilateral relationship with Japan and South Korea, both U.S. treaty allies, is important not only for Washington but also for the rest of the world.

"Camp David has been a historic setting for summit meetings and for significant foreign policy conversations throughout the history of its existence," Kirby said during an online press briefing, when asked about the reasoning behind the Biden administration choosing the retreat near Washington as its venue.

He said Biden will host Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol for what the administration believes will be "a discussion of historic proportions in terms of the importance of this trilateral relationship to the Indo-Pacific region and, frankly, to the world."

The forthcoming summit will be held at a time when Japan and South Korea seek to forge closer ties, with Kishida and Yoon agreeing earlier this year to move on from a long-festering dispute over wartime conscripted labor. It is also taking place as North Korea shows no signs of relenting in its pursuit of advanced missile and nuclear capabilities.

It will be the first standalone summit between the leaders of the United States, Japan and South Korea, as past trilateral discussions were all held on the sidelines of international meetings.

Who put the national security team in charge of diplomacy? Some may point all the way back to 9/11, certainly that was a start, but it has continued to ramp up and up crowding out all the diplomats, trade advisors and business leaders. This path only leads to war.

All the snarky comments are very telling. What the trilateral meeting to me means is that the two Asian cousin nations , that have had trouble communicating , cooperating or agree on pretty much anything are now deciding to throw their petty differences aside.

This comes at a time for humanity where all of the progress we have made since WW2, the ‘rule of law’, international standards of behavior and commerce, democracy is all under threat from a few rising, belligerent , entitled and revenge obsessed dark forces. A revenge itch that would see them sacrifice the lives of their own and others to attempt to scratch.

The ‘no more war’ ( another no brainer, cause no one wants war ) sloganeers need to have a deep think of how wars can actually be prevented, and what happens when good people do nothing in a bad situation. Taiwan being the biggest test that could kick the whole thing off. It will have to be a layered, cohesive, multinational and steadfast approach, one that’s compass is set by shared moral standards. If you are fine with letting corrupt communist authoritarians call the shots ( check out how they are dealing with their own cities inundated from the floods for reference ) from here on in then that’s where the conversation pretty much breaks down. Those that want to see the West fall but have little plan nor idea what lies in its place, our young lefty friends, the romantic revolutionaries, be careful what you wish for.

Just hope uncle Joe can at least get the script right this time, cause you do it badly and can actually serve to embolden the foes! Sorry for the long winded!

TaiwanisNotChina as usual you fail to understand that South Korea and Japan have way more in common than the Yankee doodle geriatric cowboy president of the un-united states of America.

Hence the fact both Japan and South Korea are both dubious of the US ability to provide iron clad protection for thier nations

I think you speak for exactly no one.

U.S. says 3-way summit with Japan, S Korea to be 'historic'

The end of WW2 was almost 80 years ago, so yes, the U.S. grip on Japan and S.K. is indeed 'historic'. Maybe it is time to return sovereignty to Japan and S.K.?

Let"s be very clear here. Do not think for a moment you are safe. The North Koreans can rain down hell on Earth with the Chinese in micro second under the guise of missile testing and military exercising. Do you trust the government structure and military command structure in North Koreans? China? Do you think those aggressors will give the region an advance notice on an first strike attack on South Korea and Japan? One possible strike all the way to Guam. Right through to the west coast of United States?

They\wont will not offer such a courtesy. They will come and come hard and will strike if not pushed back. And put back in lane.

It will come under the guise of an exercise.

This is the discussion that needs to be had making it historic.

In other words. New intel.

The North Koreans and Chinese are getting bolder and mightier.

And the world needs to take notice and be vigilant more than ever.

The Chinese want world dominance at any cost.

There is a reason the trilateral meeting is being held at Camp David. A very unique and special resource at the Camp only privy to President that the U.S. must show its partners and allies. In other words.

The game has changed.

No! Dead wrong and anti American of you to type so.

We the People of the United States do not want to control Asia.

We are guests here.

Here to help sustain stability in the region with our partners and help Asia prosper and its people. To assit letting all people in Asia to live free from the threat of nuclear annihilation, amphibious assaults, cyber attacks, ground invasions, and few more I can not mention.

Hate to tell you this.

But it is the leaders of the APAC region driving the narrative.

Were here to lend a hand. Here to support the region its people. Its leaders for better or wore.

@Christopher Mas Osan: You say anti American like it's a hate crime. I don't cheer for America is sporting games, why does American think the rest of the world should "follow their lead"?

My opinion is that America does not have to play "Dad" to two countries and the countries should sort their own stuff out.

@Christopher Mas Osan: You say anti American like it's a hate crime.

It can be depending on how far you take it. If you start abducting Americans like Russia and China it is.

My opinion is that America does not have to play "Dad" to two countries and the countries should sort their own stuff out.

Then they should clearly get along and make plans to deal with the 1.4 billion pound gorilla in the room.

Make this summit more meaningful by inviting Taiwan and Mongolia. It is time for a NATO type of treaty for northern and central Asia. Then this nucleus can be expanded to include Southeast Asian and Pacific rim countries

@TaiwanIsNotChina: How do you go from not liking American politics (and the fact they change every 4 years) to abducting Americas? Just because we hope you lose a sporting event (because we are cheering from another country) isn't a hate crime.

American's need to understand the rest of the world thinks you are nice people, we don't hate you as a people, the rest of the world just don't like stomping over everything because thinking the American way is the best and America needs to take a view on everything.

This article is not about a sports event. And very interesting how you mentioned the losing first, almost as if that were what you were really after.

American's need to understand the rest of the world thinks you are nice people, we don't hate you as a people, the rest of the world just don't like stomping over everything because thinking the American way is the best and America needs to take a view on everything.

Every person in every country in the world is free to take a view on everything. Not sure what the "stomping over everything" is in reference to this decade as we should be most worried about Russia stomping on Ukraine.
