What BS! Here we go with another Maddow moment. Trump is completely self-made. He had to work hard and worry about risk like the rest of us. There was no safety met, any connections, or boatloads of cash; just Trump.

We really need to make disclose of personal tax returns mandatory for anyone seeking the office of POTUS. The thought probably never entered anyone's mind in all these decades because no President ever had the gall to refuse to disclose them. "Trust me to run our country but I don't trust you to see my tax returns".

The Grifters and Obnoxious Perverts at it again!

At America's expense.

Absolutely! Every self made millionaire I know today had to work their butts off to get that 413 million dollar inheritance from their parents. That is the problem with the stupid liberal media just not getting it. Self made guys like Trump didn’t just have this money magically fall on them. On the contrary they had to work really hard to be born into that wealth and then remain in existence until their parents died and left it to them. That is the American story of self made folks like Trump.

26 ( +28 / -2 )

Liberals act like Trump himself sits down with a pencil and a calculator and does all this. There are obviously paid, licensed professionals who do this. the IRS accepted the documents based on the laws when they were submitted and there is a statute of limitations.

When did The NY Times reporters become tax accountants?

-31 ( +2 / -33 )

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

They probably didn't comment knowing that some IRS employees had been protecting Trump all these years, while others were fearing for their jobs.

Hopefully Mueller etal will learn more about Trump's financial history, including if he hid money got from Russian oligarchs and helped them launder money.

Trump: slimy businessman, slimier politician.

16 ( +18 / -2 )

Well, I think this was a given, and not that serious, but what I'm waiting for is what info Cohen and Weisselberg have on Trump's personal off-share tax havens and how much Russian oligarch money has been funneled into and out of the Trump Foundation (money laundering).

I think we'll find much like Manafort, there's been a whole lot of shady, criminal activity going on...and a lot of collusion with Russians....

The best defense Trump backers have for their political messiah is one from the Stalin-era, i.e. someone else was worse.

Straw clutching at best.

Lol! Are you suggesting the accountants the Trump clan hired were acting of their own accord? ;)

the IRS accepted the documents based on the laws when they were submitted and there is a statute of limitations.

Of course there is a statute of limitations, lucky for Trump, but he still faces fines and penalties. Does the fact that he can't be charged, not because he's innocent, but rather the statute of limitations has run out, make you feel better? Personally, I find that it speaks very poorly of Donny's character.

When did The NY Times reporters become tax accountants?

Now you're just being silly. Let's extend this logic to about anything: When did NYT become professional athletes? When did NYT become politicians? When did they become doctors? When did NYT become botanists? ;)

23 ( +23 / -0 )

Common knowledge. The only news is the doc dump.

14 ( +14 / -0 )

liberals act like Trump himself sits down with a pencil and a calculator and does all this. There are obviously paid, licensed professionals who do this. the IRS accepted the documents based on the laws when they were submitted and there is a statute of limitations.

You got that right! Because it makes total sense to have a legal system in which you can be the beneficiary of fraud and get away clean so long as you paid a pro to do it for you and the IRS doesn’t Immediately catch it because they didn’t know at the time you were committing fraud.

I am sure all laws are structured with this outcome in mind. Stupid liberals.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Trump thinks people who pay taxes are stupid.

Not quite. President Trump thinks people that don't use the tax code to their advantage are stupid. We all know everyone can afford an accountant if they can afford cable.

-1 ( +8 / -9 )

Well lets see what this proves

Trump is a crook: Knew it

Trump is a cheat: Knew it

Trump is a liar: Knew it

To his base of frightened old men , it makes no difference.

When did The NY Times reporters become tax accountants?

That sentence sums up the intellectual prowess of Trump supporters.

20 ( +20 / -0 )

Exactly! Well stated.

When did The NY Times reporters become tax accountants?

No kidding. It's not like you can just Google "tax accountant" and find any. The liberal MSM pushing lies again.

When compared to the Clinton clan, Trump is an amateur.

Too right! Obviously a guy who grew up around this kind of stuff and did it himself is an amateur compared to people that grew up poor and are self-made. This goes without saying, but libs will never understand.

I am sure all laws are structured with this outcome in mind. Stupid liberals.

Now you're catching on. This entire article is propaganda pushed by the Deep State and corrupt FBI.

The farcial Donald J. Trump is the biggest scam perpetrated on We the People of the United States of America.

13 ( +13 / -0 )

So that $1 million loan wasn't all that. It was more, much more.

Oh how the wealthy love to lie, obfuscate and laugh at you, whilst you doff your caps, tug your forelocks and applaud their criminal genius.

Except Trump is no Lex Luthor. His stupidity and contempt for the people will catch up with him, eventually.

14 ( +14 / -0 )

Enjoy your narrative changing story. When I hire a guy to do my taxes, he does them. If he does them wrong, the IRS notifies us and we correct it.

I don’t have a newspaper getting access to my dear father’s confidential tax records 25 years later and using it to try to imply I did something wrong. More than likely it’s illegal to get those records without permission. But let’s get Trump! Any means necessary!

I hope you don't have some delusion that we are going to feel bad for that after eight years of "let's get Obama, any means necessary".

charlatan: a person who pretends to have skills or knowledge that they don't actually have

11 ( +11 / -0 )

Trump had virtually no involvement whatsoever with these matters

So he did have some involment in tax fraud.

Unlike other White House candidates and presidents in recent decades, Trump has declined to release his tax returns

Cause it would show more fraud which could still be inside the statute of limitations.

Trump promoted himself as a self-made real estate mogul who started out with only a "very small" loan from his businessman father,

Trump received the equivalent today of at least $413 million

Yes, a very small loan of at least $413 million (in todays equivalent)

All the MSM, deep state, globalist, Dem, liberal accusations and character attacks; and all the MSM, deep state, globalist, Dem, liberals feigning ignorance of war, weapons sales, war crimes while truckling to Wall Street; will not bring the Dems back to power.

Its so enjoyable to watch the Dem party continue to shoot themselves in the foot day after day. LOL

So what’s the excuse when you lose the midterms? More regret about spending all your time attacking Trump instead of actually having any plan to improve The ecomony and people’s lives?

people who hate Trump already hate him and will vote against him reactively. That’s 30-40% of the voters. Dems doing nothing to get independents or to flip Repubs.

-17 ( +2 / -19 )

Pretty staggering read. It's like a mafia movie.

Most of it is pretty straight-forward and what you'd expect. Buildings suddenly losing value then jumping in value at certain times, corporations with his kids, hiding ownership behind shields, the usual.

The part that gets you is how comprehensive it is. Each example would raise some eyebrows if taken alone, but the writers gives example after example after example. And it involves the entire family. At the end of the article you almost see Trump as the victim of his father. He became just like the old man.

They would set up a corporation to handle buying housing fixtures for new properties. The corporation would pay for the items, then invoice Trump Sr. Included would be a 20% mark-up. So the corp pays $100,000 and bills Trump Sr. for $120,000, creating a $20,000 profit for marking up an invoice, all run out of the house of Trump Sr.'s son. And that corp just so happens to be owned by his children. Who, in addition to pocketing the profits, also got paid to be "managers" or "consultants."

Straight out of The Sopranos.

Then it comes time to sell. Switch from a rent controlled building to a profit building and take a property tax hit for one year. Just be sure to get the appraisal in that year so you can value the building during the narrow window of a loss. All signed off by a appraiser who spent his entire life working with the Trump family.

It just goes on and on, example after example after example.

My guess is Trump won't care about the scam part of it all, he will be most offended by the crux of the article: Trump was given a lot more than he said. It wasn't a $1,000,000 loan that he paid back, it was hundreds of millions under the table, all to avoid taxes. Trump's crisis in all of this is that someone out there, right now, might stop believing that Trump turned a million dollars into ten billion. His comments will focus on that. Just a guess.

Also, I've read the comments about accountants, but keep in mind that accountants just report to the government what you report to them. If I show my accountant a receipt for $2,000 for a new TV for my office waiting area, do you expect him to go there to make sure it's there? It could be in my living room for all he knows. He's just writing down the story that I give him. He doesn't pay if I'm lying.

Most of the issues that should have triggered a red flag comes down to opinion of value, which can vary. And the worst that can happen is that the IRS disagrees with you and raises the value, usually to a number still much less than the real number. Zero risk, unless the IRS can produce a video or recording of you colluding.

They're all just corrupt scum. You can see how Donald wouldn't bat an eye when he pays for business expenses out of charitable contributions. It's in his blood.

12 ( +13 / -1 )

So what’s the problem? Now if the times goes after every politician in Washington people’s eyes would bulge right out of their sockets. We are talking about Real Estate and Washington politics. Lol

-21 ( +0 / -21 )

@bas4 So what’s the problem?

Once again a Trump backer says to forget about the law, honesty, ethics and morality, especially if they interfere with Trump's grabs for more executive powers, and his fellow .01%ers quest to make themselves richer during his reign.

@bas4 Now if the times goes after every politician in Washington

Its so enjoyable to watch the Dem party continue to shoot themselves in the foot day after day. LOL

Totally. They just keep trying to tear down Trump, but he's unstoppable.

The Deep State is sitting in evidence that building seven was intentionally demolished. Obama ordered because it contained all the evidence that Trump is a great guy.

2 ( +10 / -8 )

So what’s the excuse when you lose the midterms?

The more relevant questions is what will be the Republicans?  I'll offer one;

The Deep State composed of Obama, Clinton, Carter, Johnson, Kennedy, Truman (you can keep going) have stolen the election from us - they used their media and Hollywood pawns to spread lies and propaganda - and China, yes China, hacked our election and cast millions and millions of votes for Democrats.  They love Democrats in China because China love's democracy...

Luckily, we have John Kennedy Jr and our QAnon brethren who are blogging from a secret location in DC - informing all of us of the Deep State cabal that is taking our government away from the "people"...  More importantly, we have honest media outlets like Russia Today and Sputnik that provide us the real truth...

We won't take this sitting down - we will resist - stand up white people, err.., I mean Republicans and take back our government...

10 ( +10 / -0 )

We all knew Trump was a liar and a faker, but I don't think most of us realised it was quite this bad. There is nothing honest or genuine about this degenerate family.

More facts. That Dems worshipped Obama completely changes that us Trump supporters always excuse Trump's actions because they aren't as bad as someone else's.

It's completely different when we make excuses for Trump because he's objectively not as bad as we subjectively think Obama was. You want proof? Har! Libs and their incessant need for proof to back up a claim.

Donald really couldn’t lose. His dad was his personal bank account. He gave him loans, extended him lines of credit, co-signed on his debt. Trump’s mistakes would have put anyone else out of business but he always had his dad to bail him out, which he did, Often.

All while paying Donald millions in fees and handing out ownership interests that were far below market value.

Trump’s best deal was liquidating his father’s empire after his death. With that cash he could bail himself out of his Atlantic City fiasco and expand into other failed business ventures. Nice reset button.

The entire family is rotten.

Rich folk do this all the time. Not saying it's right, but shouldn't be surprising. They have an army of lawyers and accountants at their disposal to outmaneuver the laws and IRS. That's why rich folk don't end up paying much of the dreaded tax rates anyways. It's the little guys that can't afford it

Stopped reading after the headline. Anyone who trusts/believes a single word printed by the failing NYT is a glutton for punishment.

So Trump shouldn't believe the Rosenstein article

And just for clarity:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/paulfletcher/2018/02/11/new-york-times-subscription-revenue-tops-1-billion-in-2017/

The New York Times made more than $1 billion in overall subscription revenue in 2017.

Let that sink in for a minute.

At a time when many media companies are struggling, The Times saw its circulation surge.

That makes President Trump’s tweets about the “failing New York Times” seem just a bit silly.

In an earnings call late last week, Mark Thompson, chief executive at The Times, reported that the company added 157,000 digital-only subscriptions in the fourth quarter of 2017, aiding the subscription surge.

At the end of 2017, The Times had a total of more than 2.6 million digital-only subscriptions. The figures include all digital products, including The Times itself, as well as cooking and crossword puzzle offerings.

Thompson said that subscription income now accounts for 60% of the company’s revenues.

Read the article 3 times today on my flight today as when I finished the first time it was like a book you have to read again Wow!! Pretty interesting stuff with lots of detail. I do not think the Times would take the risk of publishing if this was not capable of being backed up. Especially if you read the credits on the internet article. Everyone is credited (researchers, etc.). I think at some point they may be compelled to provide evidence to back this up. It sounds like people close to Trump are turning their backs on him (maybe even family?) for them to get this type of data.

I guess my perspective is (objectively):

It proves one thing pretty convincingly (in my opinion): He is a master con man and he bull$hi##ed about how he acquired his wealth.I always thought Don was truly a con but not to this level.

Regarding tax evasion or fraud: Bear with me on this....I do not think the article, when ready thoroughly and completely proves tax evasion or tax fraud but it definitely raises a very high level of suspicion. I am going to withhold judgment as he is audited every year and you can see where the IRS called him (or his dad) out on some returns during audits and made adjustments (although in some cases they seem low). Unfortunately what he did (if low-balling value claims on property) is very common and the IRS does not often pursue this type of issue. Also the establishment of the Maintenance Companies which just mark up products and services (such as the boilers, etc.) is not really uncommon. Another way the rich get richer. I think the Times stretched on this one a bit.

Finally, I would not be surprised if this article does not finish Trump off. What it will do is probably cause more and more digging.

An interesting tidbit - I got audited by the IRS several years ago (and it went well as I just made the stupid error of trying to file some forms by myself that I did not fully understand...never do that again!) At that time, I used a tax attorney and during the course of the audit I learned a lot of interesting things.

In the case of Trump, these allegations are really old and past the normal rules the IRS use for pursuing Tax Evasion or Fraud charges. Typically the IRS has 3 years and if their investigation of the tax return reveals someone concealed over 25% of their income, the IRS gets twice the time, 6 years, to file charges.

But........the time period can be extended. What I have heard is that during flagrant violations, if the IRS finds something when they dig 6 years deep and if they suspect flagrant stuff they will "restart the clock" at the incident they discovered and go another 6 years back (kind of leapfrogging).

However, this time period can be extended for a variety of reasons. And the real kicker? The IRS is limited to how far back it can look when filing charges in criminal court.....but there is no statute of limitations for civil tax fraud.

The State of New York has already said they are starting to dig deep (and I bet they are after the Trump Tax Reform eliminated the state/local tax deductions). Wonder if the IRS is doing the same.

I think things are going to start to get really interesting...beyond Kavanaugh or the stuff we have seen leading up to this.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

Anyone who trusts/believes a single word printed by the failing NYT is a glutton for punishment.

Its honesty is not in question. Trump's fraud is.

Be interesting to see how the criminal deflects from this major story. Maybe he'll mock victims of sexual assault...

Rich people can keep the economy of float, rich people have the power to build things that make our lives more comfortable I never met a poor person that could build something.

This is the moron that got elected shrieking about a "rigged" system. He's correct of course, rigged for him and the 0.1%....

The system is completely rigged, that’s beside the point and it has nothing to do with how he grew up.

-13 ( +1 / -14 )

Even if true, the real tax perps here were Donald's parents, as Donald was just a kid when his parents were started doing it. Although if Donald also helped when he became an adult, then he became part of it too. The statute of limitations for a criminal case has already passed anyway, though not for a civil case which the state could pursue to recover unpaid taxes.

Still, it would reverse and be fake news what Trump has been saying about himself - that he was a self-made millionaire who only borrowed $1 million from his father then later paid it back. This would be far from it when he was already a millionaire by age 8 (again, not his fault that he's a millionaire by age 8, but that's far from being a self-made millionaire when you're already a millionaire by age 8).

Lastly, the best way to settle this --which of course he wouldn't do despite during the campaign saying he would do when the audits finish-- is to release his past income tax returns, like other presidential candidates have done before him. (Because his parents' money had been paid out into his adulthood.)

Tokyo-Engr: Also the establishment of the Maintenance Companies which just mark up products and services (such as the boilers, etc.) is not really uncommon. Another way the rich get richer. I think the Times stretched on this one a bit.

Trump Sr. didn't make more money by doing this, so it's not about the rich getting richer. He created an artifical expense, and that expense went to his kids.

What I got form the article, and I guess you did too, was just the staggering number of examples covering so many different ways to scam the system. And the fact that Donald really couldn't lose, even when he lost. He would have been put out of business years ago for his mistakes if it weren't for the dodgy financial relationship with his dad.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

bass: He did, especially after his father passed away

After his dad passed away he liquidated his dad's empire to get access to cash. That makes him self-made with the help of a couple of hundred million dollars at time when he was going bankrupt. Plus the article gave a retelling of how Trump tried to change his dad's will to get control of his money, which is dad put the brakes on.

I'd tell you that you should read it, but I don't think you'll be happy to know the guy you worship was nothing more than a trust fund baby operating like the mafia. You might want to take a pass on this one.

Amen. It's not as if a central tenet of conservativism that anyone can become rich by working hard. Us conservatives disdain the poor because they can't build anything, make our lives more comfortable, and don't keep the economy going.

The system is completely rigged, that’s beside the point and it has nothing to do with how he grew up.

Yeah? Trump only won because the system is rigged! Everyone knows that. If Clinton had won, it meant the system was rigged. So the inverse is also true.

It is without doubt that money was moved around in various ways, but it would be very surprising if it had been done so illegally. What the Trump Family has done, is what most other Families with Wealth would have done, so by going after Trump, they will be going after most of the 1% which I'd imagine would lead to a sudden curtailment of this investigation.

Then you must love the ultra wealthy Hollywood and Silicon Valley job creating liberals. Weird, since you kept bashing them for being rich, but I’m sure you can explain your political philosophy. I’m sure it’s not just “Dems bad”

Except, conservatives need not apply. Google, FB, et al. have proven that.

Democrats are still filled with bitter rage that the Clinton Crime Family lost in 2016.

Records indicate that Mr. Trump helped his father take improper tax deductions worth millions more. He also helped formulate a strategy to undervalue his parents’ real estate holdings by hundreds of millions of dollars on tax returns, sharply reducing the tax bill when those properties were transferred to him and his siblings.”

So the "self-made" sham story can now be given a proper burial. Over to you, Trump supporters!

DT has had the game cornered for a long time. Anything illegal, shady, suspicious or underhanded and you can bet he's been there and done that. The Mob has nothing on this guy. He is the real Teflon Don and American Gangster rolled into one.

Trump can prove he's innocent in all this if he just releases his tax forms, like all presidents have done for decades. But, he's guilty, so he won't. Plain and simple. Those saying he's not guilty and doesn't need to release this tax forms know he's guilty, too, they just need to save face after defending the indefensible for so long already.

It is not true that Trump avoided paying millions of dollars through illegal activity. What is true is that he avoided paying hundreds of millions of dollars through illegal activity, and it is worse than that. He also defrauded thousands of tenants in properties that his father owned into paying much higher rents in properties that are nominally rent-controlled. Trump and his family are criminals.
