Of course there is a statute of limitations, lucky for Trump, but he still faces fines and penalties. Does the fact that he can't be charged, not because he's innocent, but rather the statute of limitations has run out, make you feel better? They would set up a corporation to handle buying housing fixtures for new properties. The corporation would pay for the items, then invoice Trump Sr. Included would be a 20% mark-up. So the corp pays $100,000 and bills Trump Sr. for $120,000, creating a $20,000 profit for marking up an invoice, all run out of the house of Trump Sr.'s son. And that corp just so happens to be owned by his children. Who, in addition to pocketing the profits, also got paid to be "managers" or "consultants."

Then it comes time to sell. Switch from a rent controlled building to a profit building and take a property tax hit for one year. Just be sure to get the appraisal in that year so you can value the building during the narrow window of a loss. All signed off by a appraiser who spent his entire life working with the Trump family.

Also, I've read the comments about accountants, but keep in mind that accountants just report to the government what you report to them. If I show my accountant a receipt for $2,000 for a new TV for my office waiting area, do you expect him to go there to make sure it's there? It could be in my living room for all he knows. He's just writing down the story that I give him. He doesn't pay if I'm lying.

Most of the issues that should have triggered a red flag comes down to opinion of value, which can vary. And the worst that can happen is that the IRS disagrees with you and raises the value, usually to a number still much less than the real number. Zero risk, unless the IRS can produce a video or recording of you colluding.

Agreed. Us conservatives know that our news outlets never make mistakes. It's not like a Fox "News" anchor has ever called out Hannity for pushing conspiracy theories.

Read the article 3 times today on my flight today as when I finished the first time it was like a book you have to read again Wow!! Pretty interesting stuff with lots of detail. I do not think the Times would take the risk of publishing if this was not capable of being backed up. Especially if you read the credits on the internet article. Everyone is credited (researchers, etc.). I think at some point they may be compelled to provide evidence to back this up. It sounds like people close to Trump are turning their backs on him (maybe even family?) for them to get this type of data.

I guess my perspective is (objectively):

It proves one thing pretty convincingly (in my opinion): He is a master con man and he bull$hi##ed about how he acquired his wealth.I always thought Don was truly a con but not to this level.

Regarding tax evasion or fraud: Bear with me on this....I do not think the article, when ready thoroughly and completely proves tax evasion or tax fraud but it definitely raises a very high level of suspicion. I am going to withhold judgment as he is audited every year and you can see where the IRS called him (or his dad) out on some returns during audits and made adjustments (although in some cases they seem low). Unfortunately what he did (if low-balling value claims on property) is very common and the IRS does not often pursue this type of issue. Also the establishment of the Maintenance Companies which just mark up products and services (such as the boilers, etc.) is not really uncommon. Another way the rich get richer. I think the Times stretched on this one a bit.

Finally, I would not be surprised if this article does not finish Trump off. What it will do is probably cause more and more digging.

An interesting tidbit - I got audited by the IRS several years ago (and it went well as I just made the stupid error of trying to file some forms by myself that I did not fully understand...never do that again!) At that time, I used a tax attorney and during the course of the audit I learned a lot of interesting things.

In the case of Trump, these allegations are really old and past the normal rules the IRS use for pursuing Tax Evasion or Fraud charges. Typically the IRS has 3 years and if their investigation of the tax return reveals someone concealed over 25% of their income, the IRS gets twice the time, 6 years, to file charges.

But........the time period can be extended. What I have heard is that during flagrant violations, if the IRS finds something when they dig 6 years deep and if they suspect flagrant stuff they will "restart the clock" at the incident they discovered and go another 6 years back (kind of leapfrogging).

However, this time period can be extended for a variety of reasons. And the real kicker? The IRS is limited to how far back it can look when filing charges in criminal court.....but there is no statute of limitations for civil tax fraud.

The State of New York has already said they are starting to dig deep (and I bet they are after the Trump Tax Reform eliminated the state/local tax deductions). Wonder if the IRS is doing the same.

I think things are going to start to get really interesting...beyond Kavanaugh or the stuff we have seen leading up to this.

Even if true, the real tax perps here were Donald's parents, as Donald was just a kid when his parents were started doing it. Although if Donald also helped when he became an adult, then he became part of it too. The statute of limitations for a criminal case has already passed anyway, though not for a civil case which the state could pursue to recover unpaid taxes.

Still, it would reverse and be fake news what Trump has been saying about himself - that he was a self-made millionaire who only borrowed $1 million from his father then later paid it back. This would be far from it when he was already a millionaire by age 8 (again, not his fault that he's a millionaire by age 8, but that's far from being a self-made millionaire when you're already a millionaire by age 8).

Lastly, the best way to settle this --which of course he wouldn't do despite during the campaign saying he would do when the audits finish-- is to release his past income tax returns, like other presidential candidates have done before him. (Because his parents' money had been paid out into his adulthood.)

Trump Sr. didn't make more money by doing this, so it's not about the rich getting richer. He created an artifical expense, and that expense went to his kids.

What I got form the article, and I guess you did too, was just the staggering number of examples covering so many different ways to scam the system. It is without doubt that money was moved around in various ways, but it would be very surprising if it had been done so illegally. What the Trump Family has done, is what most other Families with Wealth would have done, so by going after Trump, they will be going after most of the 1% which I'd imagine would lead to a sudden curtailment of this investigation.
