RIP to the 5 and hope the other 3 are found safe.

Unfortunately happens every year around this time. All one can do is to be vigilant. And don't think it can't happen to you.

Indeed. Climate change effects everyone.

And just one day later, rainy season is over, the cicadas are buzz-sawing away, and it's 35c sunshine (here in Kyushu).

Elvis: the weather does. And it's gonna be a hot one again today. And rainy season winding down on time as it does in most years around mid-July in Honshu.

I know. The point being, the weather has become more extreme because of climate change.

take care stay safe everyone.

Re: hot sunshine today in Kyushu.

So, what happened to “heaviest rain ever” forecast? That was my point yesterday on exaggeration.

It’s just another summer in Honshu, folks. Dangerous heavy rains possible in the first half of July. Baking hot north and south of the tsuyu line. And then everybody calmly sweltering in the last half of July. That’s Japan, with or without climate change.

And June - contrary to traditional complaining - a rather pleasant month. Remember it?

So, what happened to “heaviest rain ever” forecast?

"Kurume logged 24-hour precipitation of 402.5 millimeters as of 4 p.m., the highest ever recorded there"

Checks out.

Living nightmare for those involved.

i dont understand downvote above.

someone may have problem when i say take care and stay safe?

who are you minus clicker?what kind of "human" you are?

People have short memories. This basically happens every year for two or three decades now. Kanto heats up early and mid-July. Heat then centers strongest in western Japan late July and August.

People do have short memories. This now happens several times every year, and is no longer limited to the dog days of summer.

So, what happened to “heaviest rain ever” forecast? That was my point yesterday on exaggeration.

It tragically happened.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

This does happen a lot in Japan but the point is that it’s getting worse due to climate change.

1 ( +7 / -6 )

It’s just another summer in Honshu, folks.

That's trivialising what an actually is going on.

Kurume logged 24-hour precipitation of 402.5 millimeters as of 4 p.m., the highest ever recorded there, according to the weather agency.

It's quite serious.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

“heaviest rain ever” did NOT happen, Norm. And by the way, that was forecast actually AFTER the heavy rain in Kurume ( As they always seem to do). And hourly rainfall in Kurume does not show 402 mm. of rain. Less, and scattered over a long time period rather than a torrential fall of rain. Actually Asakura had heavier rain. By the way, Asakura was in the northern Kyushu rain disaster of 2017 ( July of course). In that event 566 mm. of rain fell. And there may have been other similarly heavy or heavier rains in the past.

So, 402 mm. heaviest rain ever? Not at all. This is Japan in the tsuyu ( which is worst in July, NOT June). Basically, just another year.

-4 ( +5 / -9 )

Nonsense, Heavy rain didn't exist before the industrial revolution?

Indeed. Climate change effects everyone.

-7 ( +5 / -12 )

People should go back and watch An Inconvenient Truth. Or look what the IPCC had been spouting since the late 80s. Civilisation should be over by now and ouf coastal cities inundated. But the sky hasn't fallen.

-4 ( +5 / -9 )

Nonsense, Heavy rain didn't exist before the industrial revolution?

It could have. But I'm sure climate change didn't exist before the IR.

Believe what you want. BTW I'd love to know where all these "facts" come from.

Basically, just another year.

You should absolutely, positively go to Fukuoka and tell the people that. They are still under the silly impression that they are experiencing a disaster. Maybe hand them a Garigarikun to help with the heat.

1 ( +7 / -6 )

“heaviest rain ever” did NOT happen,

According to the official records it did, being in denial of perfectly valid information just because it doesn't support a personal belief is not an argument, it is not even an excuse.

So, 402 mm. heaviest rain ever? Not at all. This is Japan in the tsuyu ( which is worst in July, NOT June). Basically, just another year.

If the experts in climate and weather say it is not just another year they are a much more reliable source of information. At least they have their names and careers to support what they say, not to mention the data.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

40 cm of rain is far more than any system can cope with.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Do you believe all media? “Experts in climate and weather” have an agenda just like with any agency that can be blamed if they underestimate. First, there’s the agencies themselves, protecting themselves and taking orders to fan the flames of alarm. Then second, the media which distorts even further the agency statements. You have to think it over more carefully. That’s all.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

Kurume logged 24-hour precipitation of 402.5 millimeters

I wonder that is in litres per hour?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Do you believe all media? “Experts in climate and weather” have an agenda just like with any agency that can be blamed if they underestimate.

That would have importance after you prove they are wrong using scientific arguments, but just pretending they are in a conspiracy to foold the public without having any evidence to prove it is worthless, it would be as valid as pretending there is a conspiracy of people organized for the sole purpose of refuting scientific knowledge about weather purely for personal profit. No evidence? then no value on the accusation.

Then second, the media which distorts even further the agency statements.

What distortion of the scientific statements can you identify from the report?

3 ( +5 / -2 )

You have to think it over more carefully. That’s all.

And where has this thinking taken you ? Ignoring the Fire Dept. because they fan the flames of alarm ?

Ignoring the Police Dept. because they are protecting themselves ?

It's their job. That's why we pay them. They study stuff and show data. If you choose to ignore experts it says more about you than them.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

You should absolutely, positively go to Fukuoka and tell the people that. They are still under the silly impression that they are experiencing a disaster.

Really? Doesn't look that way to me. Sorry that people lost their lives, but nothing way out of the ordinary for rainy season or typhoons.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

I didn’t say conspiracy. I meant they are covering their a— all the time. So they will tell people to evacuate AFTER the fact, after the rain has ended. Then they will say “More rain” “Heaviest ever”. And you’re supposed to leave your house to make them look good? You don’t need scientific evidence to see this always happening. Your logic and your experience is where you should be. It’s Ike the alarm going off on your phone after the earth tremor. They are always late, late, late. But they want to say “We warned you”. Yeah, you warned us too late!

Wake up, please. And I don’t mean woke.

I think you may have uncovered a conspiracy. That's my theory.

Kishida, who is scheduled to visit Lithuania and Belgium this week, told reporters that he will decide early Tuesday whether to make the tour later that same day as planned.

Can't be late for the junket. Biden will be very upset!

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Wow. What kind of people downvote someone posting from a disaster zone in Fukuoka? Horrible.
