Is Aso still around? He seems to live a gaffe-ridden but charmed life. Let's hope he can pull something off before the end of it.

Is there anyone less sincere than Aso in the cabinet?!

Baby steps no doubt but hopefully they can start to improve relations that have been unnecessarily soured in the past few years. Very necessary as both countries have need of each other in dealing with mutual problems and geopolitical threats.

Almost didn't recognise him without his ridiculous hat.

The guy on the left is a living fossil

A great step forward. If these two countries can form a strong alliance, watch out world!

The last guy Moon basically put SK on hold for 5 years, isn't it fantastic to have Yoon restarting the country again. I don't know WHAT SKoreans saw in Moon but what a waste of air. Perhaps now SK tech, auto, and manuf. can get a fresh start. Google and Apple should be happy at least.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida wanted Aso, an LDP heavyweight, who has previously served as both deputy prime minister and finance minister, to pave the way for a formal summit between the premier and Yoon, sources close to the matter said.

Choosing Aso is another reason to highly suspect the judgement of Kishida. To add to all the others.

""South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso agreed Wednesday that more communication is necessary to improve bilateral ties.""

As always , in other words it means ( we agreed NOT to agree ).

Aso is supposed to be one of many outgoing politicians due to the cult links. President Yoon is under fire over the Itaewon incident. This bilateral meeting was a waste of time or procrastination.

People don’t know this but Aso’s Catholic ( (O_O) – hard to believe, I know ); maybe that helps(?); anything that can help bring these two closer to each other, right? Millions of people have been waiting for these two countries to be friends, real, friends; “forget” (you know what I mean) about the past; the world needs these two to be united, strong; what a breath of fresh air (these articles recently); Yoon, do not disappoint me (!)

People don’t know this but Aso’s Catholic

What does his faith have to do with this?

Do some research. Aso is not in the cabinet. BTW, in Japan it is not called the Cabinet.

I hope they will continue to build constructive ties. There is a lot to be gained for both countries if they can manage to do it.

Well said.

Good stuff.

Much to be gained. The 2 countries make a hell of a team.

Moon Jae In, has handed South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol a political poison chalice.

The whole bilateral relationship hinges on Korea-Japan Treaty of 1965, a treaty that restores basic relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea.

Read the Treaty carefully, there is only one Court that has jurisdiction, the ICJ and the means to remedy any disputes must be subject the agreed dispute resolution procedure.

No ifs, no buts. If countries sign a Treaty, you all have to abide by the Treaties stipulations/Law.

Moon Jae In foolishly took it upon himself to politically weaponize his domestic courts, a clear breach of International Law.

President Yoon Suk Yeol has been left diplomatically hobbled.

To send former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso is baffling, putting it mildly. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol might as well be holding dialogue with a wall in a wig

A delegation is necessary, with diplomatic authority responsibility to compel the South Korean government to abide by the signed 1965 Treaty protocols, taking disputes through the agreed dispute resolution process.

Geez, even the Chinese Communist Party has a rule to retire at or around 68 years old (Xi excluded). Why is the LDP still supporting this old, political dinosaur?

It's clearly time for some new blood, likely his 60 year old son.

More dialogue is much

better than less-a positive move!

Does anyone on this planet take Aso seriously, about anything?

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

How come this 82 years old still have this type of influence? No wonder that Japan is on rapid decline.

-6 ( +7 / -13 )

More importantly he needed to smooth things over with the unification church boss….

this could have been an email

OR

as Eastman-san suggested, a zoom meeting

(with catboy filters and lots of floating hearts)

The  Korea-Japan Treaty of 1965 binds both counties to actions under Treaty law.

Actions that both japan and South Korea must adhere to.

Look, South Korea 1965 agreed to a one-sided Treaty that in 2022 is harsh to say the least.

It could with thoughtful diplomacy be open to a revisit, however this must follow Treaty law.

Tokyo and Seoul are now discussing plans to set up a foundation, funded by contributions from South Korean firms to pay compensation for wartime labor to plaintiffs on behalf of Japanese corporate. defendants, diplomatic sources said.

This course of action is a smart compromise. Everyone would save face if Japanese government contributed.

The issue still remains that future Governments could have a change of heart.

This is why Treaty Law exists

“ What does his faith have to do with this? “

1) Fifty percent of the South Korean population is Christian/Catholic; 2) in Japan, the percentage’s less than one percent but(!) 3) Taro Aso is part of that small group; 4) Yoon is also Catholic (!); 5) the key word here today is “ dialogue “; 6) it’s a fact that people with the same religious beliefs have a better chance of getting along with each other ( better dialogue ) / sorry; I should’ve explained; ( I kept thinking that you all knew what I meant ) (…)
