The RB19 is so obviously so good, but Max is simply on another level from his competitors. His tire management ability is beyond amazing.

Quick battery swapping would be practical, but would you want to install a major component of your car that regularly and not know the condition of said part or whether it's damaged, defective, etc. I wouldn't. Plus, to make it as convenient as gasoline/diesel, you'd have to have unmanned/automated stations where a large number of these batteries are stocked on premise. Not at all practical.

DT

The mishap on Nimitz involved drug use by pilots.

My experience is from my time in the post Cold War Navy.

While the ships themselves are sovereign US territory, the bases are not and that was emphasized to us when stationed abroad. If you notice we do not call Yokosuka a US Naval Base. It is a JMSDF base and the US part of the operation there are called Fleet Activities Yokosuka. Same thing at Sasebo. Atsugi is not a Naval Air Station like it would be if it were on US soil, but rather Naval Air Facility. Likewise Yokoda is not Yokoda Air Force Base but Yokoda Air Base. On all of these bases the top military officer is Japanese, the base is Japanese and the US military activities are "tenant commands" operating under a Status of Forces Agreement that spells out in detail what the US military is allowed to do from Japanese soil.

Your insights are usually spot on by you've got this one wrong. U.S. installations in Japan under U.S. Forces Japan are legitimate military bases with 100% U.S. jurisdiction granted under the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security and the SOFA. The semantics of what the installations are called is immaterial. Landside and waterside security of these bases is 100% the responsibility of the U.S. forces and entry control points and perimeters of these bases are protected 100% by AD U.S. security forces or civilian Japanese guards who work for base security. JSDF units and facilities located within our perimeter fence line are considered our tenant commands and require base access granted by the U.S. base commander, as do the Japanese police to enter our bases to exercise their jurisdiction on incidences involving non-SOFA personnel. Local JSDF commanders, regardless of rank, have zero authority or influence over U.S. personnel or base operations. Bottom-line, although we coordinate and cooperate with our Government of Japan counterparts to the extent possible, under the security treaty and the SOFA we are entitled to train and operate and defend our forces/installations as we deem necessary without prior notification or permission. It is true that the property on which our bases exist is not sovereign U.S. territory and certainly not the same as our ships, but legally and in every way that matters it is treated as such while it is leased under treaty by Japan to the U.S. Things are very different on Diego Garcia, which is a joint base with facilities leased to the U.S. by the U.K, with the two forces on a more equal footing.

Are any pilots involved?

In all my years I have never come across one that was involved with illegal drugs that would affect their ability to fly. We're simply not that stupid. It's almost certain that those involved were all junior enlisted.

Driving is not a right. It's a privilege and only so if the individual meets certain criteria, e.g. physical, mental, financial, etc. It isn't the government or society's responsibility to compensate an individual for a personal factor or circumstance, including old age or a handicap, that precludes them from driving.

By that logic we should be eligible for a refund if we never have to call an ambulance, the fire department, the police, etc.? It's a public service/infrastructure that's there for everyone's benefit to varying degrees and paid for by everyone. There's no social inequality.

You don't get arrested for professional negligence if it truly was a bona fide accident. In Japan you'd know that vehicle operators are always professionally responsibile whereas pedestrians are not, so unless these two old ladies fell out of the sky on to his car, this driver is responsible for being either negligent or making an error which prevented him from avoiding the unfortunate and fatal situation. See you'd know this if you actually lived in Japan... Lol

Osamu Furukawa has driven lots of Japanese cars for his business converting classic gasoline-powered models to electric.

Assuming he's converting actual classic cars into EVs, I despise people like Furukawa who take classic cars that have inherent historic and sentimental value as they are, and turn them into soulless appliances. If you want an EV, go buy an EV. Don't resto-mod pieces of automotive history and ruin them for the rest of us who appreciate classics for what they are.

Alfie Nokes

Yawn.

City are 10th on the five-year rolling net spend charts, way behind Chelsea, the Goldman Sachs Soccerdevils, Arsenal and financial powerhouse Wolverhampton.

What does the last five years data, which you should take with a healthy helping of salt, have to do with City's 100 charges of Financial Fair Play violations between 2009 and 2018? UEFA says City haven't cooperated with their investigation since 2018 either. If you actually believe nine clubs spent more than City these past five years, I have a bridge to sell if you're interested.

Anyone else found it odd that there's no mention of her age in this article? She's a retiree and a professional who's been married for 33 years so she's probably in her 60s. She looks healthy and fit from the photo, but no matter how experienced a hiker she is, a woman of her age hiking trails of this difficulty alone was ill advised. All the same, I hope she's found alive and well but I would say the odds are against it at this point.

It's plain as day that what the suspect threw was a pipe bomb. He was still trying to light a second one with a lighter when he was tackled by the fishermen and also had a third one on his person. Pipe bombs are meant to mame or kill, not scare, people, and Kishida and everyone there were fortunate that the suspect did a poor job making them. Kimura should be charged with nothing less than attempted murder (assassination).

With no new bases or troops going to Finland this is meaningless.

Nothing has changed except taxes in Finland will go up as they have to contribute to NATO's massive budget.

To the contrary, Finland's military is well manned and armed to the teeth, well trained, has regularly exercised with NATO countries, and already spends more than NATO members are required to based on GDP. The Finnish military is the single biggest threat to Russia's ability to effectively operate and resupply their critical forces on the Kola Peninsula, and by extension in the Baltic, so this is a massive strategic blow to Putin. No way to spin this one.
