1/40th of the allowable radioactivity levels right

That already sounds like way too much. You can't blame people for wanting to avoid it entirely.

People pushed to such desperate situations in a supposedly first world country. Once you have burned out your usefulness as a salaryman you are discarded and ignored. The devour our paychecks with taxes each month, and yet they don't go towards providing social safety nets or improving our lives at all, it all just gets siphoned into the pockets of the elites and their families.

I've found the Japan sea side to be like that, particularly Niigata where I actually found garbage that appeared to come from Korea. But the pacific side, in my experience, is beautifully clean.

@Asiaman7

What else would you make a dam out of?

Visiting Kurobe dam is pretty spectacular. I thought the idea of visiting a man made dam when there are so many other nice natural places to visit in Nagano seemed strange. But I was really in awe at the size of it, and seeing the power of the water. It's pretty amazing to think about how they built it in such a remote location. And the hiking and cable cars in the area are great too, definitely want to go back there.

Posted in: Does passive smoking on streets bother you? See in context

Smoking would have to be one of the most selfish vices there is. First of all you get almost nothing from it. People say it calms them down, if you need cigarettes because you are so nervous and anxious perhaps you should be in therapy or taking anxiety medicine because sucking down smoke multiple times a day is definitely worse. I've smoked plenty of times while drunk, I'll admit it can be soothing, but if you need to do it all through out the day even while walking in the street then you have a problem.

Second, it shows you have absolutely no self control and are basically a child. People smoking while they are walking can't go a few minutes without a dopamine hit? Just walk to you destination. No, the smoker needs to feel good all the time or they get angry and irritated like a child denied candy in a supermarket. And they expect the rest of us to be ok with breathing in their disgusting second hand smoke. I don't want to smoke, and I certainly down want to breath in smoke that has been in a smokers lungs. Look in the gutter of any street and you'll see cigarette butts. I've been picking up cigarette butts on mountains, in forests and rivers etc for years and in multiple countries. That selfishness is shared by smokers all across the world, it's actually quite amazing. Show me a public smoker and I'll show you a selfish child who expects everyone else to clean up after them.

Personally I've been able to find the small bottles in Family Marts, but I've never been lucky enough to find a full sized bottle. I haven't been looking very hard, but I've seen recently sold out displays at shops a few times.

Posted in: KFC adds N.Y. Chicken Burgers to its menu in Japan See in context

Interested in trying this out, but tbh KFC Japan has gotten too confident and greedy with their prices. I believe one piece of chicken is now at least 300 yen. These burgers are 500 yen each, they are quite small. Comparing it to a Whopper, which is 590 yen, there's not contest, Burger King is better. But, I hope all the fast food places that raised their prices see a drop in popularity, though that probably won't happen.

Posted in: How can teachers ascertain if students used ChatGPT to do homework or write essays? See in context

Easy, if the essay doesn't sound like something the student would write then it was probably done with AI. A student who can barely string a sentence together isn't going to produce anything great, and a student capable of writing something decent wouldn't use AI anyway.

@Bofington

Have you ever worked in an office that uses a fax machine? If you need a document sent securely to another office, signed by someone, and then sent back, then a fax machine is the best tool for this job. Emails can be hacked, ignored or sent to junk mail and forgotten about. And you need a scanner, which never work properly.

7ish years ago it was amazing here. I stayed in a 3 story house for about 5000yen a night right in Tokyo. Rented a room overlooking the shibuya scramble with some friends for extremely cheap, places up in the mountains where there were no hotels or anything nearby etc. It's cheaper and better to stay in a hotel now though so I don't bother anymore.

Posted in: Kishida unveils new measures to reverse declining birthrate amid election rumors See in context

Something needs to be done to help people move into the stage of actually being able to have a child. My partner and I want to start a family, but are planning on moving back to my home country to do so as it just doesn't seem possible here. Help with childcare is all well and good, but we are already dealing with low wages, high tax on everything, inflation, overtime at work. When she gets pregnant she is going to have to take a lot of time off, making everything even harder. I know having child will always be hard work, but there are so many different things here that make it more difficult than it needs to be.

Posted in: Homework will 'never be the same,' says ChatGPT founder See in context

Anyone that's worked in a school can tell when students copy things from the internet. Unless chatgpt can copy how each particular student speaks I'd say it will be pretty easy for teachers to identify its use. And if everyone in the class uses it it's going to be spitting out similar answers.

Posted in: What should parents do if their child is being bullied at school? See in context

I agree with everyone saying that expulsion or at the very least actual consequences for bullies is one of the few ways forward. It's important to teach your kids to have self confidence, and to stand up for themselves and others. But if they are getting bullied every day at school sooner or later they are going to get worn out. Kids can't be expected to fight for themselves every single day.

In my opinion, bullying is a symptom of kids being bored to death at school. School should be no more than a few hours a day and then kids should go into some sort of hands on program where they learn practical skills. Of course that would take years to develop and the current system of having somewhere to dump your kids all day is not an easy one to change.

Posted in: How do you feel about convenience stores curtailing their hours of business amid the current labor shortage? See in context

The only thing convenience stores have over supermarkets and other shops is the fact they are open all the time. If they have the same hours as supermarkets, who would choose to go to one place where everything is like 1.5 times the price?

Conbinis have been jacking up their prices, and yet the wages of the employees has remained the same or dropped.
