The thing about artists is that they make us look at ourselves from different viewpoints. Perhaps that is why dictatorships do not tolerate free artistic expression. I can treasure the existence of the Vonneguts and the Picassos, without agreeing with every one of their conclusions about life.

Vonnegut had the ability to make you pause in your laughter and think, perhaps I should be crying.

In a dictatorship everything must glorify the Party and/or Fuehrer. They don't like anything they can't control so free artistic expression is a no-no. Only propaganda is allowed.
