Homicides are still at an all-time low in Japan, so low in fact that you can comprehensively report all of them in a regular newspaper. Familicide just sticks out in the news because of its exceptional cruelty.

Police in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, have detained a 39-year-old woman who called them on Monday to say that she had killed her 8-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter.

They were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

A terrible mother, probably mad, but she was very honest with the police on the phone.

Sounds like a broken record already as seen enough of these type of articles day in day out

The reason more and more homicides are being reported generally nowadays than before is that the majority was crime related and not sensational or that interesting to the public.

There are dedicated publications relating to organized crime and the violence there. So people can read those directly if interested.

Now there is an increase of random stabbings, family murders, kids, grandparents, neighbors with a simple noise complaint etc etc. Political assassinations too. These types of murders are on the increase.

These gain traction in the mainstream media as are more connected to general society and have more interest.

This was a single mother, and probably expected to raise 2 children on her own with no financial support. Where was the father? I can almost guarantee he was not providing child support leaving the entire financial burden on the mother. Unlike in N. America there are severe consequences for those deadbeat fathers but not here in Japan.

Of course, my heart bleeds for the loss of those children lives but more needs to be done to go after those fathers who run off many times to another woman and start another family leaving the last family to struggle.

Assuming that you weren't present, I'm not sure whether that vivid imagination does you any good.

Mother is to be put down. Crazy or not, she killed her offspring like animals.

Why would you consider her living any longer ?

And also, one does not kill because he/she is just poor.

Commit yourself and only yourself suicide if you wish, but don't kill nayone else.

Promote help online more but that does never justify any bad decisions.

I had posted back two years ago that mental illness will be something that will be very prevalent not just in Japan but world wide. This is just a low number incident but expect the numbers to rise especially with the cost of living and the stagnate wages where single family mothers get little or no support at all.

Because we're not a barbaric society, and if she wasn't able to determine the difference between right and wrong, society wants to try to bring her to the point where she can.

That is some serious speculation. Perhaps the Father was paying child support. Or perhaps the Mother abducted the children as is so common in Japan leaving the Father to not even know where his kids are.
