Well, then it's time to stop all outside activities right? Construction workers are in the sun just as long, if not longer than these baseball players. Oh and what about the old guys who are directing traffic at these sites too!

These HS baseball players, for the most part, are better prepared to handle the heat, and are hydrating regularly, and are checked out more often than "adults" who are working outside everyday!

And folks who have been here a few years will know, previous years have been hotter, overall, by FAR. How may days, what was it, 3 or 4 years ago, where the high temps were over 40C.

Yeah it's hot and the hypocrisy is noted, but life does go on!

@ Yubaru - fair points. Japan ladies to now be called the Blue Samurai.

You obviously dont know the history of how the name came about, and it wasn't all that popular back 12 years ago either, but got forced on the people by the powers that be.

The rest of what you wrote is meaningless.

It's a sad story about any country that can not afford to fund it's history and museums like this.

The Japanese government should be ashamed that they can't get their priorities straight and force this institution to beg for funding to pay the light bill!

that were deeply patriotic and loved their country with every fiber of their being.

We arent going back to WW2 era ya know! Maybe you are too young to remember but American's have been protesting inequality from the podium of sports for well over 50 years. Read your history, and educate yourself about the inequalities of well over 1/4 population of America faced daily back then! If you dont acknowledge it, you truly are choosing to be ignorant of your own history.

You are just being "woke" to the realization of it now. There is nothing inherently wrong with being "woke", as it means being AWARE. Sadly too many radicals have bastardized the meaning for their own purposes and agenda.

Truly if you aren't "woke", you have your head in the sand!

The triumph by the team, nicknamed the "Nadeshiko" after a pink flower, helped lift Japan following the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster earlier that year.

This article is hardly a story about a "pink flower" but of an athlete. It's time to retire this outdated nickname and start to treat these women as rightful "samurai".

No flower "lifted" the people of Japan! The women's team raised people's spirits after winning the Cup. PR campaigns, courtesy of Dentsu btw, pushed the nadeshiko name and made it stick. There were plenty against it at the time.

Miyazawa is hardly a "flower" and one hell of an athlete!

Haven't heard of them.

Only because you dont want to acknowledge that women of Japan have the samurai blood in their veins too.

They have more than proven themselves to be the better of the two national soccer teams in Japan, and they deserve to be called the Japanese "Blue Samurai" Women's National Soccer Team.

They EARNED the respect. What have the men accomplished by comparison? Take off your blinders and open your eyes to the world around you!

Sophomoric mentality abounds in Japanese politics. After looking at some of her pictures, not the political poster one's, but of her at a press conference, he was seriously "body-shaming" this (relatively) young politician, and he should disappear forever from political life and get some help!

The wind might be downgraded but the precipitation risks still remain very real.

No one said it wasnt. Point is typhoon strength winds vs tropical storm or soon to be sub-tropical strength, matter a lot when it comes to potential damage.

We really got luck here in Okinawa, as the eye, and the strongest winds didnt affect the island, but there were still gusts recorded at over 56 m/s. If THAT kind of wind hit mainland, you are asking for a disaster!

It’s so easy to get hired. I know a guy whose job title is Professor of English at a national university. It’s a total joke. Nothing “professor” about him. They just gave him that title because he’s been there longer than other fresh off the boat “teachers”.

Probably only gave him the title in English, because there is no way any reputable Japanese university is going to officially give someone the title 教授kyoju with them having actually earning it.

In Tokyo, being a civil servant is one of the least attractive jobs, and they have few applicants as the pay is crap for Tokyo.

But on the other hand, places like Okinawa have innumerable technical colleges that are dedicated to "teaching" young adults how to get these "komuin" positions, because out here in the sicks, that's the way to job security.

I KNOW you don't understand GPS technology either as it is called Intelligent Speed Assistance Technology or ISAT, that is used in conjunction with GPS.

So if you are going to make assumptions about something or someone, get your information correct first!

These are not the only one's either! When my father-in-law was ill, had lung cancer, and was dying, his cousin got him involved with a "religious" group that tried to take over all his assets in return for "taking care" of him while he was dying.

Long story short here, between the family, we were able to cut the ties between this group and him, and they got nothing.

Sadly they prey on the weak at their weakest time, and there is little that can be done to stop them if people arent aware of what is going on.

There is really no good reason for speed limiters to not come installed in every passenger car sold.

Yes there is! I am going to guess that you are too young to know when this actually was a "thing" here in Japan, and the "bells" that rang when the vehicle was being driven over 60 here.

You will have to set the "limit" at a minimum of 120 km/h as that is the speed for the expressway toll road. So basically you are thinking that adding costs to a vehicle to "prevent" speeding is the answer. It's not!

So, he is going to have to work 340 weeks, at $500 per week, to pay it off! Only about 6 1/2 years!

Why?

At junctions, all cars should come to a halt enabling pedestrians to cross in any direction like at the Shibuya crossing.

When there are no people at a marked crosswalk or marked intersection, hell no "all cars" should not have to stop! Asking for traffic jams and stop the flow of traffic, which will cause even MORE accidents.

The Shibuya crossing is a signaled cross, and cars DO typically stop when the lights are red. Pedestrians can wait to cross too! Problem is too many old folks dont pay attention and just think they can walk whenever or where ever they want, causing more accidents!

Our children cannot be raised by social media," Mayor Eric Adams said Saturday during a press briefing on an unrelated crime.

Unrelated or otherwise, you are a fool and naïve if you think that social media hasn't become a major influence in raising children today!

People complained that television was "raising children" back in the 70's and 80's, and now, it's social media and the only people you can blame are the one's you see in the mirror.

80 years old, 80, can you believe it? This is very queer indeed. What is going on in these care homes and what is going on with the elderly here lately?

You are just paying attention to it, because you see articles here. This isnt a new or recent thing, and it's definitely not "queer"

Too many people have the image that Japanese, particularly the elderly, are perfect, quiet, meek, and would "never harm a flee" type of people and that is all BS. They arent any different than people all over the world, most are good, but there are "killers" among us too!

-2 ( +7 / -9 )

Posted in: 80-year-old hospital patient arrested over murder of another patient in same room See in context

I am not surprised, just because someone is elderly does not make them immune from committing crimes.

I once worked in a Japanese hospital group and we had one hospital that was filled with over 200 elderly patients, and I think people might be surprised at the number of times assaults and fights occurred between the patients. Many have mental illnesses as well, and just like a child, they go off for seemingly no reason at all.
