A rug so cool you won’t need air conditioning

With summer getting hotter and hotter each year, it might be time to look for more sustainable solutions. While blasting the air conditioner all day might seem like a good idea, it’s expensive and isn’t necessarily good for the environment.

Hagiwara Co Ltd is a company based in Okayama Prefecture that’s developed a rug that is made of igusa or Japanese rush grass. This material is good for lessening humidity and is known as a natural cooler.

Designed with symmetrical muted earth tones, the rug is set to fit in seamlessly in Japanese and Western-style rooms. Using a special weaving technique called kakegawa-ori, the rug is made to feel soft, padded and luxurious.

Available in two sizes, the rug costs ¥15,990 and is available on the official website.

When the temperature is over 35 degrees with high humidity then I ‘need’ my aircon!

Love it. The design here in the photo is cool. I want one, or two.

No thanks, hit that AC and go low, plus with the floor fans, my house stays cool as a cucumber.

I can't see this gimmick cooling down the house on a 38 degree day.

Better to just sell us caves. 18° year round.

I have not used air once this summer yet. Not hot enough and quite breezy with onshore winds coming across from Sagami Bay well into Machida.
