Less intense than expected.

Yes. And the worst of it appears to be over. Rain and moderate winds now. I think we may have had more severe rain in Kansai during this year's rainy season.

Why is it almost always Sapporo or Saitama???

Strangerland

Is it? People say stuff like that on JT, but whenever someone else posts numbers, it turns out it's not proportionally more Saitama or Sapporo, and instead just posters who have a hangup about these places,

Garthgoyle

It's not. The crime section is all over Japan everyday.

It may not be an accurate reflection of the actual crime statistics by location. But, on this website, Saitama does seem to be disproportionately represented in crime-related articles.

I have no "hangup" about the place. I don't think I've ever been there. But, if there was a way to easily pore through all of the JT crime articles, and tally the locations mentioned, Saitama would be one of, if not the, most mentioned by name.

I wouldn't say Sapporo, though. I don't know why that city was mentioned. We're actually thinking of getting a home there for summers.

The shutters have been shaking for much of the night, and are getting worse this morning. Stuff in the yard and around the house seem secure so far.

I see on the news that there are already power outages in Osaka and Kyoto prefs. I hope we don't get hit. OTOH, if we do, maybe my wife will finally let me buy a generator. Or , better yet, a new PHEV.

If people have seen the movie, let them criticise it. Free speech works for all parts of the political spectrum, even though the overly-loud minority make that hard to believe.

But, it's the overly loud minority doing most of the criticizing, even though they haven't seen it.

This isn't some goober on a comment thread.

Its a certified instructor rated to instruct on that particular aircraft.

And a pretty decent pilot, too It can't be easy landing a plane wheels up, intact, with zero injuries. Kudos.

Streets are empty in Tokyo. Took me 14 minutes for a route that usually takes me 30 on a monday morning.

Commuting on unofficial holidays is a bliss.

You know what's even better? Not going into the office at all.

Times like this where I wish our house had shutters on all windows instead of just two. But the prices are just too expensive to install so I haven't gotten around to doing so.

I'd love to replace our old sliding sectional shutters on our main house with electric roll-down ones. But, yeah, they're just so expensive. These old ones are such a pain to use, we only close them if a big typhoon is forecast.

Most of our neighbors close their shutters every night around 6pm. It's weird. Many of them have upgraded to electric, so it's easy. I suppose I might close only the 1st floor ones if I had electric. But, I'd wait until bedtime. 6pm is just weird.

My local Supermarkets busy in Osaka last night. Toilet paper, bottled water and onigiri in low supply or sold out.

My local supa was fully stocked today. No issues at all. It was a bit more crowded than usual for a Monday afternoon. But, plenty of bottled water, onigiri, and such. I didn't check for TP, as my closet is well-stocked from Costco. (Nothing but the best for our tushes.)

I am against late term abortions of any kind.

Luckily for you, voluntary abortions are only allowed up to 22 weeks in Japan.

Although, there are exceptions if the health or life of the mother is at stake. But, I'm sure you'd agree that saving the mother's life takes priority.

(Of course, I'm assuming you're a woman. If you're not, than your opinion on the matter is moot.)

This woman should be sterialized, banned from adopting a child or children and banned from working with children and arrested to be imprisoned in a prison for as long as she lives.

If she was "imprisoned in a prison for as long as she lives", why would all that other stuff be necessary?

I think it's pretty obvious that she doesn't love her, and apparently views her as part of her husband's family, and not as her own child.

I'm sure someone could cover for her. Afterall, it's possible in other countries.

But, why? It would be pretty selfish of her to skip that sort of work during a disaster emergency. I certainly wouldn't.

And sure, we may only speculate as to what her job is, but going by the law of averages she is probably a single mother OL on a limited contract under the thumb of a temping agency.

Quite possibly, even probably. But, why speculate, as she could very well work at one of the places I mentioned?

"At JR Shin-Osaka Station, Kenta Kikuchi, 14, and his 12-year-old brother Yuta, from Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, were seeing off their mother, who decided to go home to avoid being stranded due to the typhoon and missing her return to work"

Brtual. Why not just enjoy a little more time with your family? Nope, got to prioritise work, eh. A typical Japanese way of thinking.

What if her job was at a hospital? Or, the electric, water, or gas company? Or, internet or mobile provider? Or, a municipal office? Or, fire, police, red cross, or some other agency that provides support during natural disasters and other emergencies?

In those cases, her presence could positively affect many people, and her absence might have an similarly negative impact.

I’m happy to see the typhoon increasingly be called by its name, Lan. All over the world, typhoons, hurricanes, cyclones ( same storm ) are named. As far as I know, only Japan has this dry number system, like a science laboratory. No surprise.

I prefer the numbered system. Easier to remember.

Yes, I remember Typhoon Jebi in 2018, I believe ( referred to as 20 in Japan that year). That was very rough in Kansai. Hope that doesn’t happen again.

It knocked over a few trees and hedges in my yard, as well as many huge old trees in the surrounding hills. I don't wanna see that again.

I better get off my butt now, and secure all the loose stuff around the house before mother nature releases the dogs of war. It seems to have slowed down it's movement towards land, according to JMA. So, I have all day, at least.

The child was taken to hospital where doctors said her wound was not life-threatening.

Thank goodness.

Hayashi was quoted by police as saying she hated her husband and mother-in-law because of their attitude toward her mother.

Well, that oughta show 'em!

Looking at jma, it doesn't look to be a super strong one. I'm in Osaka and will store my bikes inside as a precaution, but after the huge one in 2018, I'm not particularly concerned about this one.

The JMA website is forecasting 40-55m/s winds for late Monday night, and 35-50m/s for all day Tuesday.

Their wind force diagram page shows quite a bit of possible damage from such winds.

Only a complete and utter fool would find any link between these 2 films.

Or someone in the US who knows how to use a calendar.

Both movies were released on the same day in the US. That was the original inspiration for "Barbenheimer". Add the fact that they are both big-budget, star-cast films from a-list directors, combined with the complete contrast in subject matter and tone, and you have a perfect storm of meme fodder.

It doesn't take a theoretical physicist to figure that one out.

you can find it without downloading it.

Like I said, download / stream, potato / po-tah-to. I don't do either, as I have this thing against stealing people's art.

I'll just wait until it's either released in the cinemas here, or settle for streaming once it's legitimately available that way, if they decide not to release it here.

I never said I watched it in a cinema and I wouldn't anyway because I never go.

You should go, once in a while. Not for every movie, of course. But, some movies are just enhanced by the theater experience. Plus, there's the popcorn, and the previews. I've missed it!

But I can say this movie won't gain much by watching it on the big screen.

I would imagine the sight and sound of a nuclear test blast is probably a tad more impactful in the cinema. Plus, as it was originally filmed in Imax, I imagine that Nolan and his DP most likely designed the shots to look best on a large screen. Why else go to that trouble?

I hope he was subdued in a very aggressive manner.

Tokimori’s father issued a statement on Saturday, in which he apologized for his son’s act.

Why? He didn't do anything.

I've never understood that part of J culture.

I'm looking forward to seeing it. It looks funny and smart. But, we're definitely waiting until after Obon week to see a weekday afternoon showing. I hate weekend and holiday crowds.

I'm looking even more forward to seeing Oppenheimer, which looks incredible. But, the way things are looking here, I may have to watch on streaming, which would be a shame to miss the big screen experience. I don't need to see it in Imax. But, I at least want to see it on a theater-sized screen, if possible.

As it was considered taboo in Japan at the time to inform cancer patients of their true diagnosis, they were left in the dark and without knowing the nature of their condition.

I remember when my wife first told me about this, I was shocked. They were still doing this crap in the 90's, too. At least they would tell the family the truth, but not the patient. (Her father died of stomach cancer.)

I realize it's a different culture. But, how did relatively modern medical practitioners justify such madness? Insane.
