Typhoon set to crash Japan holiday week

Japanese authorities on Sunday warned residents in much of the country to prepare for a strong, slow-moving typhoon set to hit during the peak summer travel week.

Typhoon Lan is on course to make landfall Tuesday on Japan's main island of Honshu, bringing heavy rain and violent gusts, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Some areas may see as much as 50 centimeters of rain in 24 hours to 6:00 am Tuesday, followed by more rain as the typhoon churns across the nation, the agency said.

"The slow speed of the typhoon could mean that its impact may last for a long time," Shuichi Tachihara, chief forecaster at the agency, told a media briefing Sunday.

"It is possible that some areas will receive more rainfall in one day than their average monthly rainfall in August," he said.

Lan approaches Japan as the nation kicks off the traditional obon holiday week when millions of families return to their hometowns for annual gatherings.

National television broadcasters have called on viewers to consider changing their travel plans to avoid the typhoon.

Airlines and train operators have warned about possible service cancellations and delays until the typhoon passes.

Packing gusts up to 198 kilometers per hour, it was moving northwest and was on track to make landfall on the Kii Peninsula on Tuesday.

My least favorite time of year in Japan. I usually leave (escape) right now, but family obligations are making me stay and suffer this year.

I have no idea why foreign tourists want to come to Japan this time of year. In my mind, the country is a no-go zone. Oppressively heat that makes going outdoors an ordeal, or hit by rain storms.

It’s sunny in Tokyo where is the typhoon???

Travel in a typhoon is dangerous so returning out of Kansai to wherever might be prudent

KIX is also prone to flooding and more during a typhoon ao best to think carefully

This is going to be interesting. Looks like the prefectures of Wakayama, Nara, Osaka and Kyoto are really going to cop it. Batten down and stay off the roof.

Bad Haircut

Oh yeah, looks bad forecast for Osaka by all accounts. Luckily we are very safe in our abode, but for some it must be very worrying especially of there is flooding and power cuts.

Is your attention span so short you couldn't be bothered to read the second paragraph which says: "Typhoon Lan is on course to make landfall Tuesday on Japan's main island of Honshu,"

As long as it doesn’t come to Tokyo I’m fine and I hope this is the last typhoon for Japan this year

Will be plenty more this year, it’s only mid August, you see.

After Typhoon "Party-Pooper" hits land, we can say goodbye to the short, brutal inferno of the Japanese summer.

Bold statement. Wait until October

Times like this where I wish our house had shutters on all windows instead of just two. But the prices are just too expensive to install so I haven't gotten around to doing so.

I was so busy last week that I had no idea Obon was "valid" until Wednesday so I came to the office this morning.

Streets are empty in Tokyo. Took me 14 minutes for a route that usually takes me 30 on a monday morning.

Commuting on unofficial holidays is a bliss.

Imagine if every other day of the week was like this.

Good point, the typhoon is not heading for Tokyo. People in this area is way over-reacting. As for the location, it is mentioned in the article.

Just popped out to buy some milk, oh my goodness the wind is already blowing quite profusely. Started raining a bit too. Please don’t go out unnecessarily especially if you are elderly or frail.

you just did.

I have removed all objects from around the garden and secured them. Moved my potted plants to shelter from the rain. We have metal shutters on all the windows. From tonight we are on lockdown. Torches are placed in every room.

Only walked 50 hards to Family Mart old boy, not a proper excursion, lol

Wind seems to be gusting even more now, think this may be a ghastly night.

I lived here through many typhoons. It is always better to prepare for them and if they turn out not to be so strong then all and good. I think this one will dump 400-500 mm of rain.

ffs

if you have shutters close them before dark. We had to cancel our gym day for tomorrow.

Living in the boondocks? Never been out of Tokyo myself. Except for Okinawa.

Honshu is a large land mass and the article said it's moving northwest right now. The JMA website forecasts that it'll move over the Sea of Japan so it looks like it won't really affect Kanto and the Tokyo area.

Tokyo will get some wind and rain but not as much as Kansai.

Dear TYPHOON 7 we ask that you pass in Peace, pass fast but not furious, try not to change course or make a U turn as #6 did.

We thank you for your cooperation

My local supa was fully stocked today. No issues at all. It was a bit more crowded than usual for a Monday afternoon. But, plenty of bottled water, onigiri, and such. I didn't check for TP, as my closet is well-stocked from Costco. (Nothing but the best for our tushes.)

I'd love to replace our old sliding sectional shutters on our main house with electric roll-down ones. But, yeah, they're just so expensive. These old ones are such a pain to use, we only close them if a big typhoon is forecast.

Most of our neighbors close their shutters every night around 6pm. It's weird. Many of them have upgraded to electric, so it's easy. I suppose I might close only the 1st floor ones if I had electric. But, I'd wait until bedtime. 6pm is just weird.

Dont have shutters here. Mind you it’s not an open place like I lived n Osaka. Apartments right behind us shielding from wind and office buildings at front.

When I lived in the sticks the last big typhoon was awful, destroyed our allotment, tres blown down, flooding, lost electricity for 6 hours and my poor pets were in a terrible state
