Even the George Best commemorative 5 pound notes are only worth x6 times face value - and at least they are legal tender for face value.

This coin is ridiculous.

While they are at it, they can also introduce laws stopping drivers from just switching on the hazard lights and parking their car in traffic

This is one of the things I find causes the greatest disruption on the road.

According to the NPA, traffic violations by bicycle riders shot up from 7,193 in 2013 to 24,549 in 2022.

Without looking at at least the increase in cyclists in that time, this number is not so meaningful.

The helmet statistics arent so straight forward. I wear a helmet on long/fast rides usually.

So stats show, obviously that wearing a helmet reduces serious injury/death if caught in an accident. Unfort some other data also seems to show that the likelihood of getting into an accident may increase with helmet wearing, factors include both risky behavoir AND recent research showing drivers consider helmeted riders as less human.

Foreign language learning in Japan, outside of other kanji alphabet languages, is going nowhere until they get rid of the ridiculous katakana system of phonetics.

And anyway, there is no need to focus per-say on English, any lang would do: and the vast majority of students wont need it in their adult lives anyway.

My guess is the comedians on tv are to blame. They instill the notion that loud = funny

I agree TV shows here comedians seem to compete to laugh/talk the loudest, it definitely has an influence on groups, especially jnr/highschool.

The Mcd should place the ban for 2 yrs or so- by then the offending generation may be gone.

This is fairly common practice - back in the 1990s in school in Northern Ireland, our school was banned from places for unruly behavoir and even cases of shoplifting.

Makes sense.

I agree with those saying that it just creates unnecessary overheads.

Many of the loyalty point systems seemed rather stingy anyways, especially bakeries where after 30+ purchases over 500¥ they give you like 200¥ or some tiny discount. Cumbersome, awkward and stingy. Nowadays my problem is too many different apps etc and passwords forgotten so end up only using a couple regularly, like paypay and rakuten (which are easy to use so much appreciated)

Thats a lot of money for the avg person - Potentially most of her life savings.

Rather poorly researched promotion.

The benefit of sauna hats is that it helps the wearer stay in the sauna for longer, as when the head area overheats the brain gets the urge to get out the sauna much more quickly.

Nothing to do with "neck rash"

There are decent arguments regarding effeciency in consolidation of these, however it never outweighs the potential misuse and further encroachment of the state into the minutiae of our daily lives.

They believe that there should be more women on boards as they are equal if not "better" than men. It is claimed that men hold the positions simply because they are men and that women are discriminated against, and not chosen because of their gender.

So the answer is to..... choose based on gender?

Surely if they based it on performance/history, women being equal or arguably "better" than men in some areas, would be sufficient ?

Choose the most qualified/competent person for the role. Anything else is discrimination.

Very useful study,

Its a study. Just because it is a "Scientific method" doesnt particularly lend weight to it or improve its accuracy. Such models depend on the assumptions and data put in- garbage in garbage out.

Remember another useful "study" by those fellas at UCL on the Corona deaths in 2020 being 2.2million in the USA alone (and some other ridiculous numbers)?

ie - not agreeing with a particular study, doesnt make one "anti-scientific". The implication that it does, is actually the embodiment of "unscientific".

"The allure of black-and-white thinking"

"The all-or-nothing problem"

Seems the author is describing the climate change alarmist thinking more than "deniers".

The problem is if you don't agree with the latest eco trend, you are somehow delcared a "denier" (deliberate association with the Holocaust and appeal to emotional response.)

"If they find one contrarian scientist somewhere, they categorize the idea of human-caused global warming as controversial and conclude that there is no basis for action."

Again, the author seems not to even understand those who don't fully agree with them or they have some characture idea of who they are. Its often not NO basis for action - it is opposing ridiculous measures that claim to be for the climate but are a massive scam, like "carbon credits". As well as those ridiculous UN SDGs; 17 fairly ambiguous and lofty statements of "goals" (afew of which are repeated), to be used as a guise for policies that they say are good for us.

No the argument is you would need to identify the progenitor in order to say "it came from X animal". Without that, which incidentally should be easy to find, it is a theory based on.... most likely whoever paid the researcher.

Posted in: Pandemic 3 years later: Has the COVID-19 virus won? See in context

"limited study"

It is the largest study to date.

"So what" - in all previous animal sourced outbreaks, such porgenitors were found.

"published reports" - you seem to come up with buzzwords as if they defacto prove your argument. I suspect you are just trolling at this stage. Peter Bogossian et all had some very interesting peer reviewed reports "published" as well.

Dengue or Hepatitis C

This is just silly now - unless you expect them to hop in a time machine.
