Mr KiplingToday 05:16 pm JST

What was Japan doing in Asia (empire building) that France, the UK and the Dutch were not doing?

> Japan lost so has to get on its knees every August 15th?

Why not? Germany shows contrition constantly, while Japan reminds the world about their suffering every year on August 6th and 15th without showing any real feeling or remorse for the war they started and the immense suffering they inflicted upon many. As one poster wrote, peace was forced on them. It wasn't something they all of a sudden chose to embrace.

The romance of flying is akin to the romance of marriage. Over time, it fades away and there is very little hope if rekindling it as both parties don't really care enough. There is still love there, though.

Hidetoshi Tojo, a great-grandchild of former premier Tojo, said there is no surprise about the U.S. military having scattered war criminals' ashes in the Pacific.

> Yasukuni shrine in Tokyo enshrines more than 2.4 million war dead, regardless of whether there are remains or not, he said. "I feel a difference in religious views in the U.S. way of thinking."

He can say whatever he wants, but, 'religious views' aside, Japan lost. After the war, the country in general got off pretty lucky as their culture and way of life was not drastically altered and the country was rebuilt. Go ask the indigenous peoples across the globe what happened to them after the Europeans came to take over.

The original Twilight Zone was a masterpiece; completely different cast and plot every show. The Munsters, Mr. Ed, Green Acres, The Honeymooners, I Dream of Jeannie, Sanford and Son. Funny shows on regular TV where they didn't need crude language or sexual innuendo to make situations funny.

Hayashi was quoted by police as saying she hated her husband and mother-in-law because of their attitude toward her mother.

She hates them so she takes it out on one she loves? There's no real explanation for that action but let me take a whack at it. It seems that maybe at least the mother-in-law lives there, possibly the father-in-law too. The tradition of living with the husband's parents, or parents in general for that matter, can cause serious strife for married couples. That, plus all the other stresses and having a baby could drive someone to do very stupid or irrational things. Before tying the knot, I made it clear that living with any parents was not going to happen. I know a few who did not or could not go that route and are close to miserable but hide it well.

Posted in: William Friedkin, Oscar-winning director of 'The Exorcist' and 'The French Connection,' dies at 87 See in context

I'd never heard of The Sorcerer until I saw it a few years ago on one of the cable channels. I liked it a lot as it actually has a plot and the acting and action scenes were passable. I wouldn't call it a gangster picture though. More of an adventure-action film. The Exorcist was a masterpiece of true horror and The French Connection was an outstanding movie about the war on drugs with truly iconic chase scenes and excellent dialogue. It was so rare back then for big budget Hollywood movies to be done in more than just English and the subtitles put on the screen. I still watch them regularly as both are still eminently watchable and easy even for today's young audiences to relate to, though there is no CG, corny tough guy dialogue or gratuitous violence. RIP, William Friedkin. There are very very few great directors like you nowadays.

A lot of the rappers in NYC in the late '70s had songs on tapes before the first official hip-hop song came out. I heard lots of Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Treacherous Three, Crashcrew, Spoonie G and Cold Crush songs before Rapper's Delight or King Tim III were put on wax. I was just speaking to my man in Jersey yesterday and we were both talking about how we wished we still had some of those tapes. Gold now.

They aren't bowing to be accountable. It's just a superficial act.

The National Police Agency attributed the increase to fewer deaths when restrictions on movement were in place during the pandemic and the subsequent return to normal when curbs were lifted.

Doesn't really hold water as the increase was the first in 10 years for the time period but there were six non-pandemic years in the time frame where no curbs were in place.

They are already focused on him just due to his family tree so if he's anywhere near as successful they'll be looking for any reason to get rid of him too.

Posted in: Japanese high school kids average 12% correct answers in English oral test See in context

David BrentToday 08:16 am JST

It's so stupid forcing kids to learn English here. The vast majority will never need it in their lives. The vast majority also have zero interest in leaving Japan or in anything non-Japanese. Make it an optional subject. Also, the decades of JET and ALT "teachers" have clearly made no difference to the outcome.

It's not stupid at all. English is the second language of the world. Even if they never leave Japan or have no interest in things non-Japanese as you claim, the vast majority will need or use English way more than you realize. There are many signs on the street, storefronts, in convenience stores, etc, that are written in English. When shopping on the Net or in an international meeting or conference, it's almost guaranteed that there will be English spoken. Also, the learning of a language should never start and end at the classroom door. Most JET and ALT have a limited amount of time to teach each group of kids each day. It is incumbent on parents and administrators to help the children outside of the classroom. Parents need to sit and help the kids with studying and practice at home while administrators need to foster a positive classroom atmosphere which puts the fun of learning and speaking correct language above getting a good grade on a test or listening to a teacher drone on forever and not giving the students a chance to practice. The Japanese I know who can speak the language well are quite proud of their accomplishment and make extra effort to continue to build upon their skills. More than a few have actively sought employment by American or other foreign companies to keep improving their ability and get away from the box that can be so confining here.

The results back up what I've seen since I've been here: The government is only half-interested and are looking for positive results but the test is based on years of improper or flawed techniques and the Japanese oyajis who are in charge probably can't speak the language well either. Nothing will change because that stubbornness is a big part of the culture, like sending kids to juku all year and expecting geniuses to come filing out.

> You are advocating a police state.

> That is ‘frickin nonsense’

> Yeah, sure. I'm willing to bet their 'drug problem' is nothing like the one in the States that causes rampant crime, homelessness, suicides and broken families. Maybe you prefer that?

> None of the things you mentioned ends people's lives, fyi (well suicide does but that is not relevant). And overdoses are at least partially the result of the victim's actions. Also this isn't fentynyl, this is heroin we are talking about, so it isn't fatal for the most part.

All the things I mention can most definitely end people's lives. Homeless people can starve, freeze to death, die during a heat wave, get attacked by people who see them as an easy target (happens quite often), etc. They also can become a danger to those around them due to many being mentally unstable and a lot of that is directly tied to legal and illegal drug use. It's incredible to me to see someone defending the fact that people can OD! Attitudes like this are exactly the problem with the U.S.

I have a lot of experience in Singapore. Nice to stay, always a joy to leave.

> All those calling for the death penalty in their country for drug offenses would have to see most of their heroes hanged.

If my 'hero' knew the penalty and violated the law willingly then maybe that's a just dessert. For the record, I am against the death penalty for what seems like a very small amount but it's better than having pushers, addicts and needles all over your city, crackheads looking for handouts and people overdosing in record amounts. That just leads to more crime and violence. I lived through that in the States and I've been to Singapore and I loved their stricter rules. The rules aren't hard to follow. Clean city, no graffiti all over and garbage everywhere and no frickin nonsense.

Although I believe you shouldn't lose your life for a small drug offense, it's a pretty damn good deterrent regardless of what this article states and I applaud Singapore for not wavering in the face of international pressure. Overly casual attitudes is what has led to so many addicts and problems in quite a few countries and societies.
