No joker costume this time? Probably because the heat this year make him lost his insanity.

Frightening way for many foreign tourists to end their holiday in Japan who were also witness to this attack.

Not another one. Enough to deal with the hot weather.

The Halloween POS said he was inspired by a previous train stabbing. This POS was probably inspired by the Halloween train stabbing, as it's been in the news lately. Let's hope that months from now, some other POS isn't inspired by this one when it's prosecution is in the news.

Minimum 50 years for the evil psycho who did this.

Just hoping the innocent victims come through this heinous ordeal.

Not sure why my factual comment would annoy people.

The Japan Today article fails to state that the train in question is a JR Kansai Airport bound train originating in Kyobashi, Osaka. Rinku town is one station from Kansai Airport.

At the station prior to Rinku Station carriages 5-8 are decoupled and continue on to Wakayama. The remaining four continue to the airport.

As the economic situation deteriorating there will be more accidents like that.

Stay safe lock your doors and windows at home during the night.

-17 ( +7 / -24 )

There is a hell of a lot missing here from the story. Dude stabs 3 people, gets off the train and turns himself in?

It wasn’t an accident, but premeditated. With at least another two months of silly season remaining, stay safe people.

How many to be considered mass stabbing, 4?

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Very fortunate that the victims appear to have only limited injuries. Hope the criminal gets a very long sentence for this.

12 ( +15 / -3 )

Good thing he didn't use a gun

Seems more of these in Japan these days

More Salty Osaka news. I hope the injured get well soon and the bad egg gets what they deserve.

He was just on his way to work at a Sushi shop, wasn't he ?

NOW you have something to freak out about....and it wasn't a Gai'Ji' this time.

My friends warned me about Spring and Summer LUNATICS who just come out of no where. it must be the change in temperature and atmospheric pressure.

That should bring taser guns to the Japanese police. That would do it.

Sounds like a ticking time bomb. Well done to anyone that stepped forward. Imagine that on the way to the airport!

Sadly I don't think Japan has 50 years for anything. It's either death penalty or a lot less. But crimes like this are a social failure. The people who do them no longer care about their own life and half the time openly admit the want to die. Intervention and mental help need to come much earlier when it can still be prevented.

2many random stabbings happening often in the trains not safe regardless of surveillance camera installments. When a pyscho is committed he comits and not afraid of cameras. Their mind is do not think do not fear just do. I notice too that this all started to happen after covid. The price hikes are also not helping angered inviduals who are living in poverty too.

A 58-year-old man said he was on the train and saw two panicked foreign passengers run in from the next car, shouting in broken Japanese that someone had been stabbed.

And how many Japanese panicked and were shouting in broken English about the stabbing?

A video posted on Twitter showed a police officer pointing a pistol at a man believed to be the suspect.

I'll be damned, a cop doing his job! Probably get promoted to station head for this one!

Wonder if this chap is a mentalist, seems like it doesn’t it. what would make him go so bonkers over such a trivial thing, I mean who carries 3 knives, 3 knives when they go out on a train, can you believe it.

‘Seems to me he was probably trying to find an excuse to do this as a way to vent his built up anger. Sly man, well he will be locked up for a long time now won’t he.

Well, it’s safer than most countries for the majority of crimes you see, but these knife crimes are becoming a trend and they are happening in busy places too where children may see and be scarred for life.

I upsets me immensely

Many people lost their livelihoods during the so-called pandemic and many policies affected people's mental state and destroyed the economy and sent worldwide inflation soaring.

Unfortunately, I fear a lot more of this coming as the rage continues to simmer to boil.

We are yet to see the kids and adolescents turn to teens and early 20's and start to turn against who they will rightly see as their abusers as they wake to what's happened to them.

This is the tip of the iceberg that's gonna rock the safety profile of Japan.

Stay safe everyone.

the attack happened on a train.

I know but maybe he was going to depart the train there you see. The train was at the station.

Wondering why the police officers are masked up, they don’t wear them around here any more.

You are just guessing.

this guy should never appear outside of jail again.

Nobody died or is likely too, depending on any prior criminal record I would say his sentence would be likely to be between 5 to 15 years. Unless of course psychiatric doctors consider him a nutter and he will be put away and released when they deem him safe to be back in society.

I guess it was misleading because from what I saw on the news yesterday on TV, they reported that it was a "Rapido" train where it happened. So, I guess it wasn't that kind of train, since you said it originated in Kyobashi. No offence. Just saying, but I'm glad they got the guy.

Thank goodness this individual did not have access to a firearm with a large magazine.

A video posted on Twitter showed a police officer pointing a pistol at a man believed to be the suspect.

The man wore a face mask, held a knife in each hand and made threatening gestures toward several officers surrounding him.

This was certainly an instance where deadly force would have been totally justified. I realize J cops aren't trigger-happy like so many cops are in the US. But, this was a clear cut instance of justifiable use of their firearms.

I wonder if there was a danger of hitting a bystander, or even each other? That would have been the only thing keeping me from unloading a couple at him. Although, if they did carry tasers, that would have certainly ended the situation quickly, without risk to others.

Why though? By all accounts the stabbings happened before the police arrived, and he did not resist arrest.

Well the stabber was arrested without a shot being fired, which means there was no need for deadly force, which means that deadly force would not have been justified at all; though depending on how wildly the stabber was waving the knives around, it may have been understandable for an officer to fire.

Then he would have the next week filled up with having to write reports explaining why he felt the need to fire his weapon.

Not according to the account in the very article we're commenting on:

*"The man wore a face mask, held a knife in each hand and made threatening gestures toward several officers surrounding him."*

Exactly.

Then he would have the next week filled up with having to write reports explaining why he felt the need to fire his weapon.

In a nice air-conditioned office or koban. Not the worst thing in July.

@cleo & Roy

I found a video of the stabber. And, he doesn't appear all that threatening. He's waving the knives very weakly, and sat down quickly, appearing rather easy to subdue. So, you guys were right that deadly force would not have been necessary in this instance. Although, it would probably have been legally justified, if they were to have used it.

I still feel that tasers should be standard issue for J-cops. They would be excellent tools to quickly and non-fatally incapacitate knife-wielding suspects in these situations that appear to becoming more common.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

"I still feel that tasers should be standard issue for J-cops."

The pen (words) is mightier than the sword. Just because you feel it does make make it come true...
