Posted in: Osaka Expo ¥1,000 coins go on sale for low price of ¥13,800 See in context

The last time the World Expo came to Japan was 2005 in Aichi. Back then gold 10,000-yen coins was minted and sold for 40,000 yen each. Despite that considerable mark-up, they now sell for upwards of 100,000 yen,

So pretty much, you’re looking at an average ¥3,333 per year added to the ¥40,000, between 2005 and 2023. No big deal. You can give yourself more than that each year.

Posted in: Japanese high school kids average 12% correct answers in English oral test See in context

My friend's daughter speaks perfect English and is regularly marked down on her tests because her answers are not exactly as written in the examiner/teachers book. (Her answers are far more eloquent and grammatically correct!

I hear you. The exact same thing happened to my oldest daughter who is also well spoken in English. The only difference was that I went to her school to defend her, as I’m also an English teacher. In the end, her teacher changed her grade, and had no trouble from that teacher. She did have some mistakes with her spelling and punctuation, and that was justifiable, as should be marked off.

I’m not surprised by this. I still have junior high students say, “I’m fine. Thank you, and you,” when asked “How are you,” despite a few years of learning English. I sometimes ask them, “Why are you fine?” They get tripped up and go “Eh.” My elementary school daughters can answer that question.

Wallace, 180,000 is 2-3 months salary for most part time workers. There is no chance people are going to afford that. The state should offer a free cremation only for 10,000yen.

@gogogo - You’re right despite what the media sometimes writes about high salaries, mostly from employees of Japan Inc. It should be known to people that there are alternatives with funeral arrangements. My thoughts are that this person who kept the body wanted the government payments or was ashamed that she couldn’t provide a respectful funeral for the deceased. Yes, funerals in Japan are usually expensive.

Decapitated man was involved in violent incident with suspect: mother

As I read this, actually, the violdent incident was with suspect: daughter.

The mother of a woman who was arrested for allegedly mutilating the corpse of a decapitated man found in a Sapporo love hotel room earlier this month *said her daughter was previously involved in a violent incident with him*

Wow! This family is really looney tunes. I'd be scared being their neighbor or being a former classmate of Runa. MY head is rolling after reading this story. Man, this is stuff you see on TV dramas here.

Posted in: More Japan tourist hot spots imposing hotel taxes to fund promotions See in context

So, let me see if I get this. Hotels and other places offer promotions. However, they are taxing the tourists for these promotions. Is that right? That sucks! I'll let my friends overseas know about this and other extra charges. This seems similar to my last company that was supposedly going to give us our salary bonus. However, that bonus was based on their calculations based on their bonus tax and percentage based on the classes we taught, rather than the traditional 15 months salary for 12 months work. Thank goodness this company is out of business.

Police said Narita, who was arrested on Friday, told them he had been drinking heavily the previous night and that when he saw the woman at the station,

So, pretty much, it was another way of saying "I was drunk and don't remember."

Posted in: 3 hurt in stabbing on train in Osaka Prefecture; suspect arrested See in context

The Japan Today article fails to state that the train in question is a JR Kansai Airport bound train originating in Kyobashi, Osaka. Rinku town is one station from Kansai Airport.

I guess it was misleading because from what I saw on the news yesterday on TV, they reported that it was a "Rapido" train where it happened. So, I guess it wasn't that kind of train, since you said it originated in Kyobashi. No offence. Just saying, but I'm glad they got the guy.

Man! She's a real nut case. I pray that her kid get lots of attention and nourishment. I'm sure the kid will also need mental counseling too.

The mother allegedly used the money she fraudulently received to pay for dining out and esthetic salon expenses, they said.

So pretty much, she was living the life while her kid was paying for it and suffering. I can't understand what kind of uhmm, human, does that to another. That in itself, is mental and cruel. Shame on her.

Didn't she have a few hundred yen? Woulda saved her a whole lotta trouble. No Parm, no foul.

At my local grocery store, I could get an ice cream for just barely above 100 yen. Now, she has an assault and theft charge, along with possible medical bills. That's more than 100 yen.

I can speak from experience regarding the Mozu Tombs, you can ride a bike around the areas to experience them up close. If you want to see them from above, I would reccommend going to the Sakai City Hall to the top floor. There is no admission, and you enjoy the views, along with the surrounding Sakai area. On a great and clear day, you can see as far as Kansai Airport, near Rinku Town. Not to mention around this time, there's air conditioning, too.

Posted in: How behavioral economics can help you save on airfares See in context

Every little bit helps. I personally do a combination of checking online fares via various search engines (mostly thanks to some travel hacks on YouTube). Then, I will contact the airline directly. Of course, the cheaper fares will have you travel during odd hours and/or through airlines that aren't based in both, the departing country and the destination country. It really depends on what you are willing to do.

The root of it really is both, the GOP and the NRA. The NRA is the special interest group paying the GOP to support the fire arms. My solution is there should be a limit or a cap on how much special interest groups can contribute to the politicians. It's already the law for elections. The special interest groups the really the ones making the politicians rich. Check the facts about the NRA's contributions to the politicians.
