1glenn, sadly the system of a Republic rather than democracy was deliberately instituted at the founding of the USA specifically to ensure the “right” sort of people got in to power. Who are deemed the right sort of people has changed over time but nor the system.

I agree a direct election would at least be as democratic as any representative system can be.

Not sold on the efficacy of these ideas, there financial viability or the long term reliability of the proposed disposal of the captured carbon.

If we truly want to reduce the carbon in the worlds atmosphere then China and India have to stop their huge and growing carbon emissions. Just to highlight the scale of the problem, China has emitted more carbon in the last eight years than Britain has since the start of the Industrial Revolution. China’s annual increase in emissions are greater than Britains total annual output.

The Swiss have a good system of participatory democracy though that also has legacy limitations that are no longer necessarily relevant. Australia makes voting mandatory with fines for failing to.

The only true democracy that has ever existed was Athenian democracy. With modern electronic connectivity allowing everyone to participate in the democratic governance without the distance limitations of the past we are in the position of instituting the first real democracy since ancient Athens, with the slight tweak of doing without slaves and allowing females to participate.

Of course politicians will vote for it at about the same time as turkeys vote for Christmas as it will take power out of their sweaty paws and actually enfranchise the people.

In the past I have often driven home after work in a bad mood, but never felt the need to plough through a pack of strangers as a means of working it off.

He was in a bad mood, that is not a mental health issue, the guy is just a self absorbed, thoughtless, cretin. A nice long rest cure in prison should cure his bad mood.

Kyu Sakamoto, a 43-year-old singer known for his hit song "Sukiyaki

My wife loves his rendition of that song.

Undoubtedly a sad tragedy and still painful for those who lost loved ones and they wish to honour the dead but not sure there is a need as the Mayor said:-

continuing to pass on the memories

Memorialise them and the tragedy by all means but with the passage of time the relevance will fade. No need to burden future generations who never knew them.

Are these the usual rent-a-crowd or just the honest but ignorant? I suspect the usual emotional but uninformed reaction to anything with the word nuclear attached to it.

He may be as guilty as hell but there is a presumption of innocence in British law so he has a right to be protected from psychological torture, given proper legal representation and to be convicted if that is the case on the basis of objective and factual evidence not a coerced confession and some semblance of a fair trial.

Not sure whether he can be tried in the UK for an offence allegedly committed outwith the UK. My understanding is that article 44 doesn’t cover these facts

Reginald Bok, sadly running scared of an aggressive bully is not an effective defence. Appeasement of an aggressive bully has been shown time and again to merely encourage their behaviour. The best and only effective way of ensuring they don’t attack is to ensure they realise it is going to hurt them more.

Taiwan is an independent, successful and democratic country, which being next door and highly visible is precisely why is scares the hell out of the Chinese dictatorship and they want to drag it down to their own dystopian level.

Apparently the heat was only one of many problems they were asked to remedy but failed to act on, lack of shade, lack of adequate medical facilities, no provision for those with dietary needs, and the toilets and their cleaning were wholly inadequate. You can imagine 40,000 teenagers using toilets that are not cleaned regularly, in that heat, a disease disaster waiting to happen and already inadequate medical facilities. Wow!

The heat had already caused heat exhaustion and health problems among the children.

Either corruption or sheer incompetence.

A “possible charge of murder” “Possible”!!!! Well his head didn’t fall off”. He didn’t Knick himself whilst shaving. Now ,I’m no Sherlock Holmes, Columbo, Conan, or Inspector Clouseau but I really can’t think of any other charge than murder.

Nah, it’s obvious he tripped in the bathroom and fell against his razor, cutting his own head off! :)

Yep, the “West” including the USA and Japan are providing arms and support to a sovereign, democratic country that has been genocidal attacked by a rabid neighbour. If any fascist fans and supporters don’t like it, tough.

Posted in: Record heat waves illuminate plight of poorest Americans who suffer without air conditioning See in context

Look at the pictures of the housing; the construction is wholly inappropriate for a hot climate. These people have lived in an area with hot summers which now are getting hotter but have never adapted their building methods to suit the climate.

There are methods used for millennia by people in very hot areas of the world but rather than adapting to their environment they seek to install a temporary, energy inefficient, carbon generating heat pump that just displaces the heat to their general environment making the overall problem worse and massively increasing the carbon footprint that is the underlying cause of the increasing heat.

GBR48, you need to put something light reflecting in the windows to redirect the heat outwards. We found the white lining to our curtains proved very effective in doing that last year, having replaced all the bulbs with LED they produced no noticeable increase to the heat when on and massively reduced the energy consumption. Just wish we could have painted the roof and brick walls white!

All very well but its success is dependant on the police actually enforcing it, which doesn’t appear too hopeful.

Cyclists can cause a great deal of damage and cause accidents, not to mention kill pedestrians when they crash in to them as has happened a couple of times near where I live and I am sure all over the world.

Indeed you do. But you can not educate the wilfully blind. So as you have demonstrated in Oh so many posts that you are a CCP/neo-fascist running dog there is little hope for you, So your posts have to be treated with the contempt they deserve. Luckily Japan and the Japanese people have more empathy and humanity and are capable of making a moral judgement and identifying evil, oppression, genocide and oppressive dictatorships when they see them so you are wasting your time.
