I don't expect an apology. I expect the Japanese PM and people to at the very least to just acknowledge the millions of people they are responsible for killing with a war of aggression that they started and not only refer to dead Japanese to commemorate WWII. They won't and complain about Asian nations not forgetting yet don't want to forget about the atomic bombs. Hypocrisy at its finest.

Due to the lack of discourse, regret, contrition, and shame, it's hard to really know how supposedly peace-loving Japan is. Japanese don't like to talk about it so what are their true feelings that they hide and never reveal openly. Most likely quite a few hiding right wingers in the population including government and corporations. You'll never know how they really feel cause they won't openly say it but behind closed doors or anonymously let their true colors come out.

Just look at the downvotes on this site on posts about Japan's WWII past. What does that tell you about some Japanese posters on this site. Most won't engage in dialogue but their downvotes speak volumes. Just how peace-loving can they be when they have zero sympathy for the millions their country killed for greed and power. They don't even want to mention them when commemorating WWII.

It’s sunny in Tokyo where is the typhoon???

Is your attention span so short you couldn't be bothered to read the second paragraph which says: "Typhoon Lan is on course to make landfall Tuesday on Japan's main island of Honshu,"

Honshu is a large land mass and the article said it's moving northwest right now. The JMA website forecasts that it'll move over the Sea of Japan so it looks like it won't really affect Kanto and the Tokyo area.

I dunno. I guess one could come out of the movie feeling uplifted, positive even, and henceforth decide to not be the kind of relentlessly boring old man who guffs on about woke children's movies.

So now you're positive you know how old I am? LOL! Anyone can make an assumption. For example, for you to think that watching Barbie makes you a better person is because you're an uneducated, childish philistine who thinks they're a self-appointed social warrior a la Megan Rapinoe.

But I do I know for a fact that you don't know the difference between rated G and rated PG-13 and still feel sore about it!

People are paid to clean up stadiums. Cleaning up your own garbage is commendable but it's overkill to clean up others' garbage when people get paid to do it. FIFA has lot's of money and you're taking away a job from someone who needs the job and money. They're not a cash strapped NPO or community group who need financial help. Volunteering to help a rich company or organization is being naive.

And he too had many so- called intelligent professional people following him, doctors, lawyers, etc... *Well, and I remember what one of my teachers at Uni saying, anyone can become a professional and pass exams at University but that does mean they are intelligent, it just means they can retain enough knowledge to pass an exam

You realize that if you're a scientist, lawyer, or doctor you have to perform in that function and perform well else you wouldn't be able to retain a job. It's not just about passing exams. In some professions, performance is required.

GarthgoyleAug. 11  06:41 pm JST

Japan had the lamest and most stupid approach I've seen regarding to smoking.

Smoking outside on the street, bad for people's health.

Smoking indoors, "no proven facts" (according to J-politicians) that secondhand smoking is bad. So it's totally fine to smoke indoors.

Smoking is prohibited indoors in all public buildings and even in most private buildings. Some buildings have smoking rooms and they're the only place to smoke and are well ventilated plus everyone using them are smokers so they can't complain about second hand smoke.

Or are you suggesting that it should be illegal to smoke in one's own home.

Whatever are these women thinking? How can they be so stupidly gullible?

It obviously has nothing to do with stupidity or intelligence. Aum's members included scientists, lawyers, doctors, etc., often from prominent universities.

It isn't about being gullible but more about being susceptible and vulnerable.

These cults and individuals target certain people that they know will respond the way they want. It's all carefully thought out and planned. They know who to work on and they're not all women.

Bye, I hope God isn't mad at you about that picture episode you pulled.

Why would god be angry at her for exposing priests who sexually and physically abused children? You realize the vatican and catholic church knew what was happening but did nothing allowing the abuse to continue for decades. They then denied it, claimed the children lied, and tried to cover it up.

She was right and had the guts to speak out at a time most didn't know what was going on including me. She then had to endure abuse and derision for a long time. In your religious zealousness, not surprisingly, you've managed to twist the truth.

*No, the demons that she had were her own sad, and very tragic trauma** she had to endure growing up and beyond something she could never truly shake.*

Yeah she had trouble with her family but she also spent almost 2yrs in a catholic youth detention centre. You're not aware of the vatican and catholic church's track record in Ireland and elsewhere when it came to children under their care? So it wasn't necessarily her 'own' trauma. Thousands of others shared her experience.

The real test will be if bipartisan collaboration, on a federal level, can address the area of drone and robot autonomy; giving them the ability to make decisions on their own on the battlefield without human intervention. It saves time without having to go through lengthy chain of command with speed being a critical factor for battlefield success. Once you develop swarms of these weaponized machines, humans stand little chance beating them. Too efficient and too fast and making decisions that humans would never even consider.

A drone or robot has probably already autonomously decided the fate of a human's life, which raises huge moral and technological questions, yet there's been little discussion which needs to be discussed among G7 nations. There is a massive AI race and a lot of countries will do whatever they want and thumb their noses at laws and regulations.

Directed a lot of films including my faves To Live & Die in LA, French Connection, and Exorcist. He was kind of "realism" director with his films often feeling like documentaries. Apart from Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield, there is no soundtrack in the Exorcist. No jump scares from sudden sounds, It all leads to an intense build-up. One of the old school directors who relied on technique not technology and gimmicks.

Comparisons pale into insignificance when faced with the prospect of such devastation on a global scale.

Japan is a peace loving nation, with a constitution to prove it.

The Government of China has learnt nothing zero from the Imperial Japanese Army surrender.

It is imperative the lessons from the use of atomic weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki be fully realized and yes I fully support Japan Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui underlining message.

it is a heartfelt message of peace and a genuine belief to the cause of nuclear disarmament.

Your point of whether or not Japanese to forget what they did because it was the past; it happened so long ago, is why I suggested that the J education system could review how the next generation is taught Japan imperial expansion that led to the second world war.

This can and should be achieved by educators not politicians or the belief that present day Japan must constantly bend double in countless statements of apology and remorse.

We agree more than we disagree.

The bombs were horrible and caused a lot of death and suffering but keep in mind that civilians were told to leave the cities by the US and Japan was asked to surrender. The Japanese gov't and military refused to provide food, water, and rations to those leaving and downplayed the bomb. Thus many stayed. I doubt that Japan would've acted the same if the situation was reversed.

The Memorials in Hiroshima and Nagasaki don't say a thing about the millions killed by Japan nor do they mention that it was a war of aggression started by Japan. Take a look at the Japanese posters on this site. How many have expressed contrition for what Japan did. What does the gov't and people do to commemorate the end of WWII every year. They pay their respects to the Japanese war dead. That's all. Not a word or sentiment for those that they caused suffering.

If Japan expects more sympathy and remorse, it should be more from their side. Instead they want everyone to forget what they did yet focus the bombs. And yes it starts with education but it's just not happening.

To suggest that the hundreds of thousands innocent civilian lives lost in the atomic weapons dropped on Hiroshima/Nagasaki, whole families, incinerated, tens of thousands to suffer the affects of radiation poisoning into later life, can be justified as revenge is frankly shameful.

The number of people killed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki pale in comparison to those killed by Japan throughout Asia. We're talking around 200,000 - 250,000 vs 8,000,000 - 10,000,000. How much regret, compassion, and sympathy is shown to those millions killed by Japan in Japan. Today? Instead they deny. lie, and whitewash yet demand the same about the atomic bombs. Japanese are told by Japanese to forget what they did because it was the past; it happened so long ago. How can they then keep bringing up Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

This is a criminal matter within Japan and it's legal jurisdiction. Of what business is it of the UN Human Rights Council? Does the UN investigate **every** criminal case in the world?

Even though his behavior was made public in Shukan Bunshun in 1999, the Japanese media, gov't and police did nothing. The victims were still afraid of consequences and the public was apathetic. It took a BBC article for the agency and his relative to make a comment as well as encourage more victims to speak out and the public to show interest. If left to Japan's media, police, government, and public, it would have never been mentioned again. The UNHCR getting involved can expedite the process and ensure something will be done because if left in Japan's hand, nothing would happen. That's why. It's not that difficult to understand.
