Come on, guys! Wages at major companies are going up so much that people might make ¥3000 more a month than before! That should cover the cost of one or two diapers, right?

Fighto!: "How about providing infrastructure, hospitals, medicine, agricultural capabilities and FOOD for your people first, little Rocket Man? You know, the things all responsible governments are supposed to do."

Oh! You're talking about North Korea! I thought you were talking about Japan maybe providing for social security, infrastructure, understaffed hospitals, agricultural capabilities (instead of subsidizing farmers who don't want to work in a nation 60% reliant on imports), and FOOD that is going up in costs every single day while wages are not, and staff are decreasing due to the aging population! My bad. Instead, while we are paying through the teeth in taxes in Japan, that is all going towards... oops... more missiles. Or at least, more planes and guns, while the government tells us there is not enough for food and they have to increase taxes. Take a look in the mirror, my friend.

They should learn ALL history, from Pearl Harbor to incarceration, to the bombings that caused Japan’s surrender.

It'll be a variation on streaming, like streaming directly into VR goggles and a sensory suit, and/or some way to beam directly into the brain. But, it would still be streaming.

Posted in: Japan will be tough to beat at World Cup: Norway coach See in context

A "nadeshiko" meaning "caressable child", but referring more to the nostalgia of a demur woman with idealized traits, perceived to be increasingly rare, like the "nadeshiko" who waited for their samurai masters to come home -- Samurai Japan, the men's team? The name should not be allowed, to be honest, as it is insulting.

But, they sure are playing well, as they have in the past. The one thing I love about the Women's World Cup more than the men's is how level the playing field is. Contrast that with the men's and you see what I mean... especially watching teams wait to see whom they are matched with in the first round and some screaming with joy while others cringe and curse. With the women... could be Japan wins again this year, could be someone else. It's almost never repeated.

Posted in: Japanese life expectancy falls in 2022 for 2nd straight year See in context

Hogwash. It's falling because the current centenarians had VERY different lifestyles. I know an old man in Okinawa who has seen a grandchild die of heart disease, very mind the grandchild's father died as well some time ago. Many in Okinawa barely walk anywhere and insist on driving, eat more fast food than in a lot of prefectures, etc. That's only one example. There's also the stress of overwork, poor diet (not aforementioned fast food alone), poor sleeping patterns, toxic stress of everyday life and living costs, etc. I have said for decades it won't be long before Japan sinks to where the rest of the developed world is. With costs continuing to rise, taxes going up, and no young people coming in to fill in the void that will be left by the aging population, it'll drop even further.

Posted in: From what you have seen in Japan's major cities this summer, do you think there are too many foreign tourists visiting the country for the industry to handle? See in context

Nope. Still seems a lot less than it used to be, and FAR less than what the government still wants -- unless you're the Kyoto mayor, then you just want the money but not the people.

Right... that's the way it SHOULD work, but instead companies that cannot keep up will seek government protection, be granted money and foreign companies that are far more advanced will be barred to protect the locals. Then the companies that cannot compete will get regular subsidies to keep afloat while tariffs on other companies' products are so high we are forced to buy local.

Posted in: Japan opening of 'Barbie' marred by controversy ahead of nuclear memorials See in context

"No Japan release date has been announced for "Oppenheimer", which chronicles the creation of the atomic bomb. The film has been criticised for largely ignoring the weapon's destruction in Japan towards the end of World War Two, obliterating two major cities and accounting for more than 200,000 deaths."

Surprise, surprise. If it doesn't paint Japan in a good light (and Japan is painted in it) a movie won't see the light of day here for some time, despite Academy Awards or profits, etc. People railed about Indiana Jones 4 -- not because it was garbage, but because the opening scene "made light of nuclear bombs and it is not funny!". How They See Us on Netflix was almost blocked in Japan due to one officer in the interrogation of one of boys saying, "I'll go Nagasaki on your backside" (I paraphrased the last word). Outrage all around, but any other culture's sensitivities and it becomes deer-in-headlight here and complaints about backlash. "Hamada doing blackface? What's wrong with that? We don't see that as a racial issue," etc.

Lighten up. Let people who want to see the movie see it, or the fame it gets while Japan shuns it will show all the more how things in the movie were probably right.

Nihon: "Easy to say as a man. aye."

Not easy to say as a human being at all, actually. "The parents didn't know!" which means that only the girl and possibly her baby-daddy and some friends did, which means absolute neglect. She may have only buried the corpse but make no mistake, she killed the baby first. She could have gotten help, even though there may not be enough of it here, especially for someone so young. She still could have tried, though.
