Whatever the next way it won't be from Japan, while the whole world already move away from physical media using streaming, Japan still stuck with DVD rental, places like Tsutaya and Geo are still doing business in Japan.

I'm sticking with DVDs. I am relaxed about consciously uncoupling from the industry.

Vibrations. Animal seances.

I'm guessing the next step will be 3D followed by VR.

"Better Streaming' with less compression I think - Will be nice when we can stream and download movies at the same bit rates as a 4K disc. And yes, VR Goggles/Headsets also, but with much improvement from whats on offer now, but again all dependent on much faster/stable Internet. Thats what is holding us back.

I usually watch DVDs, and will continue to do so. Especially if it’s mine. However, my wife and I have Amazon Prime which is OK, and cable TV, which includes Movie+ and WOWOW amongst other channels. I have noticed that movies previously available on Amazon, as part of the Prime package, get taken off if they are being shown elsewhere. And vice versa. For example, the John Wick series and Back to the Future series have both been shown recently on WOWOW, so aren’t available on Amazon. And I am sure they will be available on Amazon again soon. I wonder if the companies collude with each other?

Most commenters believe that things with develop progressively - faster, better, newer. I wish I shared your optimism.

Given the state of the environment, the increasing militarisation - preparations for war, and return to a cold war, with reduced access to food, goods, chips and the 'war on plastic', what comes next may well be a lot less technologically impressive than what we have today.

Maybe VR? Where you can really immersive yourself in the movie or show and perhaps they'll start making more of those Choose-Your-Own-Adventure/Ending movies so you can "customize" and "tweak" the movie according to the choices you make.

It'll be a variation on streaming, like streaming directly into VR goggles and a sensory suit, and/or some way to beam directly into the brain. But, it would still be streaming.
