Thank you 'itsonlyrocknroll'...excellent link!

Well looks like the numbers are gonna be even higher now, during this 9th wave. Hospitals will be more busy.

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

Nice but massive crowd everywhere.

Is that enjoyable to watch when packed like sardines

2 ( +6 / -4 )

My only thought is, 1 million people, how many toilets?

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

Well, they had the fireworks last year in Osaka, e went but it was soooo crowded you see, I can imagine Tokyo would be even worse.

What am I missing? There were Sumida fireworks in 2020-2022 also. I watched them on TV with the same very elderly guy hosting with young ladies on each arm.

Luckily no Azabujuban matsuri. I guess the pawn shops don't have much to sell on the street

It was a great show.

Yep, attempted to bike around to get some photos, but couldn’t get anywhere good at 7:30. Need to stake out you space well in advance. Got some good shots of Adachi fireworks but did layout our sheet in the morning to save our spot on the riverside.

are you still wearing a mask while walking alone on the street. Life is too short unless you have medical issues, overweight or advanced age you should not be controlled by an over reaching governments and corrupt pharmas.

Nice to see these seemingly small, but surprisingly significant, pieces of normality returning after years of COVID disruptions.

If you can stand the heat, Japanese summers are awesome, and really help to bring communities together: hanabi, matsuri, bon-odori, shotengai events, and more.

Best fireworks of the world from the best city of the world..

After a long absence, it was especially thrilling to be out with the very happy crowds on a hot, sultry night. What a show! Grab a cold beer, some street food munchies. See many happy people's faces, couples, kids; made me very glad to be in Tokyo. Wear my "jinbei" summer outfit and ride my bike around.

Great to see again!

Absolutely right! In my neighborhood, through these events, I get the chance to meet many of my neighbors.

I enjoyed it at home on my 4K tv while doing barbecue and a few cold ones with my mates! The crowds down there was not worth the hustle for me…maybe others were brave enough to go through that crowd!

I did not go. Just as was the case with this year's Hanami, the Tokyo government banned this event for several years under the false pretense doing so would slow the spread of Covid. For one thing, it's an outdoor, open-air event, and two, Covid is spreading more in Japan now than it ever has in the past. They can't track the numbers anymore, even if they wanted to. Nonetheless - after having it prohibited for so long, popular demand was absurdly pent up, and when that happens, overcrowding and the risks of stampede pose serious danger. It's amazing to me the lengths they're going to try to kill Shibuya Halloween, a far more benign affair, when the crowds for the fireworks seem to dwarf them in comparison. Inconsistent and chaotic seem to be the common theme in post-reopening Japan. I'm not even sure I want to support any events or affairs the Tokyo Metropolitan government is involved in until Yuriko Koike is out of the picture.

The event did run safely though, and I am happy especially for people who live nearby that previously needed to travel to entirely other prefectures of the country in order to witness Hanabi during Covid.

wtfjapan: "LOL youve never been to Sydney Harbor New years fireworks, puts this to shame"

I have, and you're right. The bursts of Coat-Hanger Bridge alone send shockwaves.

And anyway, no less than three colleagues have come down with Covid this week, two of whom attended Tenjin Festival in Osaka. The reason, among gossipers? increased foreign tourism, of course.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Anyway, enjoy the show, but don't complain about the Covid rates after.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Always keep in mind that the sheer numbers of Covid related infections is meaningless! It is now no more dangerous than the seasonal flu/influenza. Does everyone think that masking against flu is also good? Ditch the masks, everyone. They are a panacea, not a real answer.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Ah, Patricia's mask radar went off.

It is now no more dangerous than the seasonal flu/influenza.

Bad enough. A real influenza (not the sniffles) can be crippling and deadly.

Does everyone think that masking against flu is also good?

Have you ever been to Japan?

They are a panacea

Please look up the definition of "panacea".

Good stuff! Hopefully everyone had a safe fun time! I went to a much smaller event (though still beautiful) myself so less likely to be incidents like crowd crushes. Yes, there are going to be people catching Covid from this (hopefully no serious cases), but I think people going are aware of the risks by now and taking whatever precautions they feel they need to. And, there will be Covid spreading anyway just from daily life drudgery (could be at school, at the office, on the train). So, may as well catch it while having fun at a summer festival, possibly for the first time in years for many. Silly reasoning maybe, but Covid is probably here to stay, and life must go on.

They are a panacea

Placebo? You know, not the band but the other thing.

I looked those up. They are indeed spectacular!

However, as I don't see myself being in Sydney for New Year anytime soon, Japanese firework festivals will suffice for me. :)

Too much Co2 the weather going to get hotter next year

Gold old @wolfshine. As upbeat as ever!
