“He should have offered a sincere apology for the actions of Imperial Japan.”

I agree. Leaders of every major country, especially those with colonialist and slave-trading past, should offer a sincere apology for their past actions.

Suspicions of match-fixing in Sumo are nothing new. It’s more of a show, an entertainment than a sport.

As the issuer of its own currency, the government can’t run out of money and yet it refused to pay just 300 million yen of the museum’s utility bills. This is national disgrace. The cult of balanced budget has wrecked havoc on Japan’s economy for three decades.

A good move. In a country where consumption makes up more than 60 percent of the GDP, increasing civil servants’ salaries will stimulate the economy.

Overstaying your visa is a crime. The new revision will send illegal aliens the wrong message that crime pays.

Japan should spend its money to improve its own decaying and obsolete infrastructure rather than generously giving away billions to foreign countries. Vietnamese residents in Japan are now poised to surpass Chinese in the number of criminal offenses committed. I hope Ms Vice Presidential will do something about this before “enhancing people-to-people exchanges.”

A ‘physician’ is a medical doctor. Oppenheimer was a physicist.

“Would an article be written about a return of a Nazi SS "good luck flag" to a grieving German family and it described as "a miracle" and "a love story"?”

Probably would not. Mr Matsuda wasn’t a member of the Nazi SS that tried to annihilate the entire Jewish population. Only someone with a warped mind would want to taint and tarnish a heartwarming story of reconciliation like this.

Posted in: Markets skeptical whether BOJ will change ultraloose policy See in context

Ueda is right in maintaining the BOJ’s low-interest rate policy since the recent rise in prices are mostly due to disruptions in supply chains: rising oil and food import prices and the war in Ukraine. Japan is still in the three-decade long deflation and demand is low.

Don’t blame it on global warming. The recent heatwaves worldwide are caused by the jet stream temporarily having shifted southward. The earth has actually become cooler over the past eight years, shown by the fact that the Antarctic ice has grown thicker.
