Think I’ll go there next year in my grandfather’s Royal Engineer battledress, complete with Pegasus and Red Beret. See how much they like that. Idiots.

“Big pull.” Very clever.

Do annoying tourists get told to “Push off”….?

But the govt was right to be concerned at that early point in the war, given the tactics of imperial Japan's espionage activities.

What utter nonsense. No Italian-Americans were interned. No German-Americans were interned. Those that were, were not US citizens. Their loyalty to the US was never questioned, never in doubt. Contrast that with Japanese-Americans, approximately two-thirds of whom were overwhelmingly 2nd or 3rd generation US citizens. And their loyalty was always questioned, always doubted.

”I don't want any of them here. They are a dangerous element. There is no way to determine their loyalty... It makes no difference whether he is an American citizen, he is still a Japanese. American citizenship does not necessarily determine loyalty... But we must worry about the Japanese all the time until he is wiped off the map.”

Lt.General John DeWitt to US Congress.

And yet it’s notable that every time there’s an article like this, here you are reading and commenting. Why bother if you are “tired of this silly wordplay”?

As for the movie in question, I personally won’t go to see it, as it has little interest for me, but it’s great to see it so popular and annoying so many in equal measure.

Posted in: Cinema, TV, laser discs, video tapes, DVDs, streaming...what do you think will be the next way we view movies? See in context

I usually watch DVDs, and will continue to do so. Especially if it’s mine. However, my wife and I have Amazon Prime which is OK, and cable TV, which includes Movie+ and WOWOW amongst other channels. I have noticed that movies previously available on Amazon, as part of the Prime package, get taken off if they are being shown elsewhere. And vice versa. For example, the John Wick series and Back to the Future series have both been shown recently on WOWOW, so aren’t available on Amazon. And I am sure they will be available on Amazon again soon. I wonder if the companies collude with each other?

Girls have been allowed in the (Venture) Scouts since 1976, later open to younger girls in 1991. Did you complain 30 years ago?

It looks like they’re leaving the Jamboree area, going home. So uniform not compulsory. Have you ever attended a Jamboree? Uniforms are worn on parade. When they relax, they wear everyday clothes, with their neckerchief and toggle. In the photos they are wearing the neckerchief, if you look closely. But then, you just seem to want to be on your high-horse, and go, “ooooh girls, girls.”

Yep, long and hot, the sky turned a Mediterranean blue as the vapour was burned out of it. Hard to work in, I was doing a dustbin round at the time.

The heat and the West Indies. Both ominous that year, especially Michael Holding.

And literally, my old man was a dustman, for over 20 years at Birmingham Salvage Dept. Used to take me on his rounds…….

Posted in: Yamazaki 'must-have' whisky turns 100 as global demand soars See in context

A question here. How do you all like your whisky? Neat? A splash of water? Rocks? For me it’s a splash of water… unless it’s bad and then I’ll top it up with dry.

This is based on the knowledge of those that make it: if it’s a single malt and from the Highlands or Islands, never straight, and certainly never with ice. Take a separate pitcher of iced water, and add (the water only) according to taste. Been to plenty of distilleries in Scotland and they all said the same. I’m a big fan of anything from Islay, but my favourite is Talisker from Skye.

Subtitles. Dubbing is the bane of all film and TV actors, who should be heard as they intended. I would never want to see “Seven Samurai” dubbed, nor understand why someone would watch “Poirot” without hearing David Suchet’s voice, instead preferring some “voice actor” put their interpretation on a character. Let them stick to anime and commercials.

I found a lovely cool stretch of woods in northern Ibaraki. It has a shallow stream running through it too. Exactly where, I don’t want to say. It is unbelievably peaceful there, that I’m not sure even the locals are aware of it. And in autumn, it is utterly stunning.

No, the NHS is not on life-support. It’s shuffled-off this mortal coil, and is currently hammering the last nail into its coffin. And all because of successive tory governments, Boris bloody-Johnson, that red bus and for the want of £350 million every week.

Posted in: Japanese app aims to detect cat pain See in context

If you don’t understand your pets health and mental condition, don’t have one.

Until Golden Week this year, I had two cats for the best part of twenty years. I took them both to have their vaccination so that if my wife and I went away somewhere they could stay in a cat hotel.

After two days, “Cat” (19) was still fine. But “Fox” (18) was uncomfortable, she couldn’t settle; stopped eating when she had been a voracious eater; started to poop in places away from the toilet. The vet told us that she had a kidney problem, and that there wasn’t any chance of survival. She must have been ill beforehand, but showed absolutely no signs of it.

She took another four days to die. During that time she would want to sit with me, struggling to walk or to climb up to see me. The last time she did so, she died in my arms. Her final breath convulsing her tiny body, before she went limp in my arms.

I have never cried so much in my life. More than when my parents died. More than when I lost my first love. I understood her and she, me. She would be waiting at the door when I came home from work. She’d sit on my shoulder whilst I read a book. Now she’s not here. I’ve lost my best friend.
