the woman was found unconscious at around 6:40 a.m. Saturday, I'm assuming August 12th. Nothing says she had overdosed on the day of her arrest on July 6th or afterwards or that she was under the influence of a drug at any time. Are you also insiuating that this woman must be a foreigner because only they would use illegal drugs and Japaneses would not?

Maybe it's just me but being detained over a month for violation of the Stimulant Drugs Control Act seems excessive and may have more to do with her death than the drugs she was accused of possessing. Just been in Japan 30 years and have read enough stories of what detainees endure during their detentions/interrogations (confession extractions). Seems that an independent body should be conducting an investigation in such a case, not a potential participant in the death.

The police wouldn’t do anything to hurt anyone or neglect their duties would they? This is Japan with the highest morals.

It is because of this violation of human rights by the Japanese authorities, tht the UK will not extradite suspects back to Japan.

If this poor woman suffered from substance abuse (If) why was she not seen by doctors when arrested? And her treatment in prison was abysmal.

The number of people who've died in Japan's police custody is atrocious. Why was this woman even in there for that long without official charges being brought up? Her prolonged confinement and her death are gross violations of international human rights.

The cause of death could have been something that would not be realistically detected without specialized medical care, and without more details we can't know for sure this care was even warranted (being detained for violations of the stimulant drug act do not automatically means she was a user for example).

Still, under custody means the police became responsible for her well being, so a full investigation to eliminate any possible neglect of this responsibility is guaranteed. Unfortunately in Japan it takes a lot of optimism to expect this investigation to be done impartially.

Indeed. Even with no official information I can tell you the most probable cause of her death though - delirium tremens. If an addict was held in a detention center for a long time without necessary medical support for addicts coupled with unbearable conditions during the most hot month of the year and probably unkind exhausting interrogations that is very likely her body couldnt endure that.

They probably wanted to know who was her supplier so they kept slowly torturing with unbearable conditions her until her heart failed.

Kept in solitary confinement, no legal rights, three meals a day, ten minutes "exercise" in a tiny room with no windows. A supervised shower ever couple of days. No one to talk with. No windows in the cell. Nowhere to sit, no chair, no bed, nothing to do, nothing to read. Just waiting for the next meal. "When can I get out of here?" No answer.

You lose the will to live.

May as well be in China, North Korea or Russia.

Unless there is independent investigation, police investigating themselves does not have any credibility. Since he died while in custody, police and officials are fully at fault and responsible for the dead.
