A woman in her 30s has died after being found unconscious in her cell at a police station in Suwa, Nagano Prefecture, police said Sunday.
According to police, the woman was found unconscious at around 6:40 a.m. Saturday by an officer who had come to wake her up, Kyodo News reported. When she didn’t respond, she was taken to hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.
Police said an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Police said the woman had been detained since July 6 after being arrested for violation of the Stimulant Drugs Control Act.

I wonder what country she is from. It sounds like she is a drug user that overdosed on her drugs
Jolyon
Was she held nearly 40 days without any charge being brought?
BertieWooster
She had been in solitary confinement for over one month.
Why?
Were they trying to force her to confess to something she didn't do?
With this kind of thing going on, we may as well be in China.
Rodney
Since July?

Why do people keep dying in police custody in Japan?
There should be answers about this

the woman was found unconscious at around 6:40 a.m. Saturday, I'm assuming August 12th. Nothing says she had overdosed on the day of her arrest on July 6th or afterwards or that she was under the influence of a drug at any time. Are you also insiuating that this woman must be a foreigner because only they would use illegal drugs and Japaneses would not?
Maybe it's just me but being detained over a month for violation of the Stimulant Drugs Control Act seems excessive and may have more to do with her death than the drugs she was accused of possessing. Just been in Japan 30 years and have read enough stories of what detainees endure during their detentions/interrogations (confession extractions). Seems that an independent body should be conducting an investigation in such a case, not a potential participant in the death.

I wonder why that was your initial thought from reading the article. Mine was "poor woman".
You may be right, or perhaps someone involved in dealing
Given that she was locked up for over a month, are you suggesting that the justice system was supplying her with illegal drugs during her confinement?

The police wouldn’t do anything to hurt anyone or neglect their duties would they? This is Japan with the highest morals.

It is because of this violation of human rights by the Japanese authorities, tht the UK will not extradite suspects back to Japan.
Disillusioned
Another death in custody in Japan. It'll be interesting to see what the cause of death was although, it will likely not be released to the media.

Alan
100% correct in that assessment old top.
Chabbawanga
No, it doesnt. Read the article again.

I would not dismiss heat stroke as a cause of death. Has happened in Immigration Detention Centres.
But agree...Japan Police and law suck .
Realistic
Another devil act by japanese police and officials.
Realistic
100% agree!

get arrested for just one day detainment, you will understand the experience.
opheliajadefeldt
If this poor woman suffered from substance abuse (If) why was she not seen by doctors when arrested? And her treatment in prison was abysmal.

Well said Rodney, try 90 days +, the best diet you ever went on in your life.

The number of people who've died in Japan's police custody is atrocious. Why was this woman even in there for that long without official charges being brought up? Her prolonged confinement and her death are gross violations of international human rights.
virusrex
The cause of death could have been something that would not be realistically detected without specialized medical care, and without more details we can't know for sure this care was even warranted (being detained for violations of the stimulant drug act do not automatically means she was a user for example).
Still, under custody means the police became responsible for her well being, so a full investigation to eliminate any possible neglect of this responsibility is guaranteed. Unfortunately in Japan it takes a lot of optimism to expect this investigation to be done impartially.
winston
She's been in a cell for over a month so how on earth could she have overdosed ?
winston
She was in a cell not a immigration detention center
wallace
Police detention cells do not have heating or ac units.
winston
Obviously she's from Japan otherwise they would have said what nationality.
That's usually the case anyway
Yuuju
Indeed. Even with no official information I can tell you the most probable cause of her death though - delirium tremens. If an addict was held in a detention center for a long time without necessary medical support for addicts coupled with unbearable conditions during the most hot month of the year and probably unkind exhausting interrogations that is very likely her body couldnt endure that.
They probably wanted to know who was her supplier so they kept slowly torturing with unbearable conditions her until her heart failed.
RIP poor soul

Kept in solitary confinement, no legal rights, three meals a day, ten minutes "exercise" in a tiny room with no windows. A supervised shower ever couple of days. No one to talk with. No windows in the cell. Nowhere to sit, no chair, no bed, nothing to do, nothing to read. Just waiting for the next meal. "When can I get out of here?" No answer.
You lose the will to live.
May as well be in China, North Korea or Russia.

Unless there is independent investigation, police investigating themselves does not have any credibility. Since he died while in custody, police and officials are fully at fault and responsible for the dead.
