Why did Top Gun Maverick succeed? It's because all that CGI mess wasn't excessively used. Honestly, CGI car chases just don't cut it for me anymore. Way too much going on with too much going on.

It additionally suggested legal amendments to allow four-day work weeks from April 2025 provided productivity is not affected and employees work longer on other days to make up the total hours. This system is currently limited to employees with commitments such as child care or caregiving.

I don't understand, so if one were to choose to work 4 days a week, they would need to work 10 hours + 1 hour lunch break on other days to make up for their "lost time"? No thanks, won't be able to get enough sleep on those days and the extra day off would end up being a chore day since laundry would pile up.

Posted in: Japan traffic accident deaths up in Jan-June for 1st rise in 10 years See in context

Where I live, stop signs have a nice clean white line that tells drivers to stop the vehicle before the white line, yet literally everyone puts on the brakes after they pass the white line. This catches me off guard all the time since it always seems like they are going and I have to swerve out of the way. Same with cyclists, these stop signs should be treated as a slow down and look for oncoming traffic sign for them, yet they proceed to speed through blind spots and expect cars to stop for them. I am actually surprised the accident rate here isn't higher.

Posted in: Japan eyes new system to fine cyclists for traffic violations See in context

The ignoring traffic light one should be a case-by-case basis in my opinion (for cyclists and pedestrians). There are traffic lights every block and if you happen to hit all of them, it's no faster than walking. A lot of times there are no cars to wait for and the coast is clear the entire time you are waiting. Unless they implement smart traffic lights that change based on real-time traffic, this rule is kind of harsh in my opinion. Everyday I come across a traffic light that turns red for absolutely no reason.

But I understand if many disagree with the above, leaving the decision up to clueless pedestrians and cyclists with no understanding of traffic laws will cause chaos as they feel they always have the right away even if the sign says not to go.

Errrm, don't we have a trade surplus? Let's use this to help subsidize for the people, be it by lowering gas prices or by lowering electricity bill. Keeping at least one of these lowered helps the entire populace, including businesses.

I think this article wants to imply that the "perv hunters" and the woman are working together to accuse innocent people that they photographed her inappropriately when in fact they didn't and threaten them to either pay up or they will take them to the police. It has been a tactic that has been around for quite some time now and many choose to pay up instead of ignoring these false accusations so as to limit conflict knowing that if turned in, they will likely be convicted even if they didn't do anything. A show called Ushijima-kun did a similar bit if I remember correctly...

Kids on their summer break having to deal with mountains of homework in this heat. Why even bother giving them any work at all? Productivity will be at an all time low and their brains won't be able to remember any of the work given to them. The whole point of a summer break is to not have school in these conditions. Let them enjoy their few weeks in peace, come back refreshed and ready to go.

Don't you mean "If it's broken, don't notice it"?

It's not hard. Just don't speak Japanese with them, and read them lots of books. Show them western media.

Thanks, will do!

Well according to this expert who studies and conducts research in consumer psychology and has a PhD in economics, everyone has apparently come to accept price increases:

All jokes aside, I 100% agree with Larr Flint and we need to use this surplus wisely and stabilizing the yen should be a priority.

This will encourage more senior citizens to pull out all their money and have it stored in their house somewhere. Scammers and other criminals cannot be stopped, they will adapt to the new environment and proceed to do criminals activities with what is given to them. Hopefully this new law won't encourage those criminals to move from the "Ore Ore Sagi" to home invasions. That would be a scary thought.

Gogo,Comfort is not having to leave your home to get money, with an ATM onsite and mini store and restaurant

Everyone has their own opinion when it comes to what they feel is comfort so I wouldn't really get into an argument there. Some people like living near a train station because it offers them comfort knowing they have easy accessibility, some people like living away from the station because of the comfort of not having all the noise. To each their own.

Posted in: Crime in Japan rises in 1st half of 2023 as COVID restrictions ease See in context

Is there really a correlation between Covid restriction easing and crime? I would assume everyone wearing masks would help burglars blend in with the crowd when plotting an escape. lol

The increase may be related to the financial circumstances of those who choose these "Baito". It's just like those who choose to work in the sex industry or Papa-Katsu, they don't want to do it if they don't have to, but they do it so that they can take back some of their debt or make ends meet.

An interesting video if anyone is interested:

I started off liking whiskey when I first had a sip of Yamazaki that I had at a nomikai (not my money). After getting interested in whiskey, I started to learn just how expensive Japanese whiskey is compared to say scotch or Irish (imported). I still love the distinct taste of Yamazaki or Hakushu, but the price points are keeping me from buying them. Same with Ichiro's malt.

Very glad to see the tourists coming back and enjoying their time here! But for the tourist industry, I wouldn't get too heavily invested in propping up the industry just yet because we don't know how long this temporary surge will last. Better to compare figures after some time has settled rather than comparing 2023 to 2019 in my humble opinion.

@rainday

I understand, hence why I stated this as well: "Problem will be if we can afford to scrap our current infrastructure to allow for automation in these areas."

But you make a good point on the vehicles needing to get serviced for repairs, this will be extremely costly and probably not a viable option.

I wouldn't be too worried about transportation, it is one of the faster industries moving towards automation. We may very well have self driving buses/ taxis in a few decades. Problem will be if we can afford to scrap our current infrastructure to allow for automation in these areas.

residents will no longer be able to maintain their lives.

This will depend on what type of jobs they are doing and if the pay is sufficient enough for them to maintain their lives.

They may have three hours of club, two hours of juku, one of piano, Nova, five hours of homework and a partridge in a pear tree to look forward to after school is over. If they’re high schoolers, they probably have a test or ten the next day, classes on Saturday and no summer vacation.

Spot on! This is all prep work for when they become a shakaijin and now bosses are wondering Why Are My **Employees Unmotivated?**
