Climate change is making typhoons worse. Downvote if you like, the truth doesn’t care about a thumbs down on a comments page!

My flight’s just been cancelled. No typhoon here though.

I’m flying from Kansai Airport on Monday night. Or not as the case may be. Talk about bad timing.

We keep getting heatstroke announcements round where I live every day. It’s like, yeah - we know!

There’s a snake ‘on the loose’?! Sounds like something from a cartoon.

Isn’t the bigger story here that he also doxed her?

“A photo of the “female local assembly member ” would have helped with this article.”

Really? So we can judge for ourselves and leave more hateful comments about the poor woman? Probably best to leave her alone.

I don’t think a comment on a Japan Today news story about porn being a lesser of two ‘evils’ when the other is upskirting is good my to cause a pandemic of porn watching around the world. In fact, I’d be surprised if there wasn’t already a pandemic of porn watching around the world. Rather that than upskirting. Especially if the people involved in the videos are consenting.

“Creating a public nuisance.” Is that really the best way to refer to this? More like being a pervert who can’t just go on the Internet and find a porn site if he really can’t find a girlfriend.

No, there isn’t any doubt. Only that which is largely created by troll farms funded by the fossil fuel industry. Read a book.

Posted in: Student arrested for alleged possession of cannabis, stimulant drug See in context

Shock horror! Oh no, not… cannabis! One of my students was talking about how she saw people slumped in the backstreets of Vancouver on her trip the other day. Her conclusion was that it was probably because of cocaine or cannabis. For me, that answer speaks volumes about the degree of ignorance around drugs in Japan. Also, why is it seems as more acceptable when we see drunken salarymen sleeping on benches or throwing up at the side of the road?

Pity the person who has to ask the questions over and over again. What’s your name? What’s your favorite food? Can you use chopsticks? Oops, that last one was from the ask a foreigner test.

I always find it funny how this country has such a strict attitude towards ‘drugs’, but sees alcohol and cigarettes as totally fine, not drugs at all, have as much as you like, move on - nothing to see here.

To the people saying ‘so what?’ she’s a human being just like the rest of us. Obviously, she won’t be reading the comments section of Japan Today, but a little niceness and empathy is a nice thing in a sometimes nasty world.

“it’s only like a cold now.” Except that a cold doesn’t have the risk of giving you Long Covid. Down vote all you want, it’s true.

I worked with a female colleague who was assaulted in a lift. When she went to the female officer in charge of counseling related to this kind of thing, she was told that 1. The perpetrator must have been foreign. And 2. That she was partly responsible because of the clothes she was wearing.

Attitudes towards this kind of thing really need to change here.

Posted in: Smart girls don’t marry? Japan rushes to erase stigma for women in science See in context

Also, why has the word ‘misogyny’ replicated ‘sexism’, the former literally means a hatred of women, but men who fit this category would seem to be vastly in the minority. Sexism and gender discrimination in general on the other hand, would appear to be far more prominent in society. I even read the feminist Caitlin Moran refer to ‘Misogyny and hatred of women’ recently. Aren’t they the same thing? Maybe I need a new dictionary.
